$2.95 -- The Faithful -- SM Freedman/ Tanya Eby --> 12.8 hrs/ R-4.4 --> suspense

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($1.99) | Kindle ($3.99)

FBI agent Josh Metcalf believes he has uncovered a decades-long conspiracy involving missing children. His obsession has led him to compile hundreds of cases. All involve children rumored to have psychic abilities - and all have no witnesses, no leads, and no resolution.

Meanwhile Rowan Wilson, a meteorite hunter for NASA's Spaceguard Program, is losing her grip on the past. Memories of the childhood she thought she'd had are vanishing, and dark recollections of kidnappings, mind control, and an isolated mountain ranch are taking their place.

When Rowan's shadowed past converges with Josh's research, they uncover a deadly plot to reshape humanity. With the world's survival dependent on stopping a vast network of conspirators, can they decipher - and expose - the truth in time?

How Men Have Babies: The Pregnant Father's Survival Guide

Whispersync: no deals at this time

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes...Yikes! Of course pregnancy is thrilling, but it also poses enough challenges to test a saint. In addition to the excitement, there is pressure as you tally up the costs and cope with morning sickness, birth classes, and in-laws, not to mention cravings, celibacy, and a host of other surprises. Couples need to lighten the mood with a good laugh every once in a while. This audio guide on pregnanthood from a man's perspective can provide that comic relief. Alan Thicke has collected hi thoughts, along with salient advice and expert opinions, on the entire 9 months in a diary of his recent pregnancy...oh, yes, his wife was there too.

They are giving me a refund. They have also given me an extra credit to make to up for the inconvenience.

People kvetch (a little Yiddish there) on MobileRead about Audible sometimes, but they look very good to me, compared to the also-rans like Downpour, Audiobooks, ad nauseam. I'm thinking especially of how well their website is designed, functionally speaking. And how it works almost flawlessly.

I think that I know at least part of the reason for those facts. You may remember the controversy, maybe 3 months ago, about how Amazon (in particular) didn't treat their employees well--driving them too hard, etc. Someone gave an example of this. It was that supervisors would not let IT (I assume) employees go home at night until they fixed a buggy webpage!

I'd say that that kind of pursuit of excellence is rare among companies. And some companies may preach excellence, and have the pursuit of it as one of their "core beliefs" or whatever, but just don't hire enough employees, or give them enough hours, to insure that excellence actually exists.

$2.95 -- Agent to the Stars -- John Scalzi/ Wil Wheaton --> 8.8 hrs/ R-4.3 --> sci-fi

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($2.95) | Kindle ($8.99)

Wil Wheaton, a Star Trek: The Next Generation alum, is a canny choice for narrator of this intersection of science fiction and Elmore Leonard-esque Hollywood farce. In addition to being a rather prominent footnote in sci-fi history, Wheaton’s also got a great voice — sonorous, with an inflection similar to a late-night radio DJ who’s bemusedly sharing an anecdote on air between tracks. His voice also carries a hint of that lilt peculiar to many native Angelenos, which comes in handy when he exaggerates it to Valley Girl-proportions to portray starlet Michelle Beck, former cheerleader and current box office draw.

Hollywood agent Tom Stein is the book’s hero, and when the story begins, Michelle is his most important client. That is, until Tom meets Joshua, an extraterrestrial whose alien race hires Tom and his boss, superagent Carl Lupo, to represent them. The Yherajk have decided their best hope for a peaceful first contact between their race and all of humanity is to out themselves via the movies, and they know if they want to make it in Hollywood, they need good representation.

Wheaton’s voicing of Joshua, who has traveled to Earth as the Yherajk’s representative, is another highlight. Joshua, like his kinsmen, looks like a gelatinous blob, gives off a noxious odor, and slithers around amorphously. He’s also incredibly educated when it comes to human pop culture, having logged countless hours watching sitcoms. Wheaton delivers Joshua’s line, “We look like snot. And we smell like dead fish,” in a nasally deadpan that suits a one-liner-delivering alien to a T.

Even when Scalzi veers into semi-philosophical territory — as when he explores why an alien race would choose a Hollywood debut over staging their premiere in Washington — Wheaton keeps the narration moving with his just-right character voices. Look out for the both silly and spot-on sounding Quebecois accent he uses to portray Roland Lanois, an art-house film director with a critical role in the novel, and for his Buddha-like turn as Gwedif, a Yherajk storyteller. —Maggie Frank

$3.99 -- The Wicked Will Rise -- Danielle Paige/ Devon Sorvari --> 9.1 hrs/ R-4.3 --> YA fantasy

Quote:
The Wicked Will Rise --> Dorothy Must Die Series (book 2 of 3)

Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($8.99)

My name is Amy Gumm - and I'm the other girl from Kansas. After a tornado swept through my trailer park, I ended up in Oz. But it wasn't like the Oz I knew from books and movies. Dorothy had returned, and she was stealing magic from the land. The Wizard was back. Glinda could no longer be called the Good Witch. And the Wicked Witches who were left? They'd joined forces as the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, and they wanted to recruit me.

My mission? Kill Dorothy. And when a group of former - possibly still - Wicked Witches tells you to do something, it's kind of hard to say no. Except my job as assassin didn't work out as planned. Dorothy is still alive. The Order has vanished. And the home I couldn't wait to leave behind might be in danger.
Somehow, across a twisted and divided land, I have to find Nox and the rest of the Order, protect the true ruler of Oz, take Dorothy and her henchmen down - and try to figure out what I'm really doing here. But in a place where the line between good and evil shifts with a strong gust of wind, who am I supposed to trust? And who is actually Wicked?
Quote:
In this New York Times bestselling sequel to Dorothy Must Die, who is good—and who is actually Wicked? The Wicked Will Rise is perfect for fans of richly reimagined fairy tales and classic tales like Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles and Gregory Maguire's Wicked.

That series sounds delightful. Brooklyn Public Library has all three audio books. Thanks for the post, I never heard of these before.

Looks like there are 5 novellas out, too, with two more due this year. I think my library has all of them in digital and all three audiobooks (all with hold waits, of course).

X-link to the DRM-free thread for the new Humble Bundle:

Humble Book Bundle LGBTQ exploring Pride Month contains three audiobooks: at the $1 minimum tier you can get the non-fiction StoryCorps: OutLoud: Voices of the LGBTQ Community from Across America from National Public Radio.

At the better-than-average tier are added two Lambda Award-winning fiction titles: Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet (which IIRC got adapted into a film), and If You Could Be Mine by Sarah Farizan, which was also named a Rolling Stones Best YA Novel.

I've got a new freebie for 'ya, but you'll have to do a little work for it. Harper Audio Presents is a podcast featuring excerpts of Harper titles, along with author interviews, etc. For the next 8 podcasts, they will be serializing the complete audio edition of Agatha Christie's "After the Funeral," read by Hugh Fraser. The fastest way to find the podcast (for me, at least) is to go here. They have a link to the podcast on both SoundCloud and iTunes, where you can download each episode.

Quote:
When Cora Lansquenet is savagely murdered with a hatchet, the extraordinary remark she made the previous day at her brother Richard's funeral suddenly takes on a chilling significance. At the reading of Richard's will, Cora was clearly heard to say, "It's been hushed up very nicely, hasn't it.... But he was murdered, wasn't he?"

In desperation, the family solicitor turns to Hercule Poirot to unravel the mystery....

This title was previously published as Funerals Are Fatal.
I must admit I'm looking forward to completing my set on this one. While these podcasts usually stay up for a long time, these may be the exception to the rule.

Enjoy!
