Actually 4.5 is the latest...

But many are sticking with version 2 or earlier to avoid the possibility of Adobe's newer hardened DRM (which no one uses at this time AFAIK).

I am still on Windows 7 so can't test anything on Windows 10 , the plug-in works fine here.

Google is the only one who uses encrypted DRM, all other bookstores including Kobo Netherlands use social DRM and sell only epubs, no kepubs.

I seriously doubt that Kobo Netherlands does not sell in kepub format. Remember, for kepub format there will be NO download option listed; the only download is done either by Kobo Desktop or your kobo device via WiFi.

I thought Kobo worldwide sold KePub, but only if you used your device to download the book. Any books downloaded from the Kobo website are ePub using ACSM, which forces you to use ADE to retrieve the book.

Kobo Netherlands migrated with Bol.com and only sell epubs. Since they are only on social DRM you just get a download link on the website provides you directly with the epub, not with an ASCM file, and you don't use ade any longer to download trough, the social DRM gives a watermark.. Tried once this week with my device but I got an epub, also when I enable all books by Kobo and sync, I get epubs, not kepubs. (Maybe English or other languages then Dutch are still kepubs and maybe works trough ASCM files and ade, never tried that, but Dutch books bought on the site or by the device are epubs and only watermarked, on the site you pay and directly get the epub, no ASCM file, and if u buy trough the device, an epub is send.)

@nick_1964: Sorry guy. As an experiment I changed my Kobo account to have Netherlands as my home country, then the Kobo web site changed to Dutch and displayed dutch books. I selected a free book, added it to my library and then did a sync on my Glo HD. The book came down as a Kobo epub or kepub format. Yes; it also showed as being Social DRM on the web site.

You don't want 2.0. You want 2.0.1.

You can get 2.0.1 from http://www.adobe.com/support/digital...downloads.html

Then you didn't do the right trick, I can make a movie, I can resync again and again with two readers, they are EPUBS.
BUT, a BIG BUT, when buyed a reader by BOL.Com your account will be migrated with both, they call it the digital bookshelf.
(Also other company's join that, so you must have a digital bookshelf to and i don't think you have a Bol.com account and a digital bookshelf account (leesid) and then even 4 or 5 bookstores are joined all to one account.)
So maybe it is because the account of BOL.com that it sends epubs since the affiliate is Bol.com also, so when i logon at the koboshop it knows that I buyed the reader with Bol.com and thereby sends EPUBS.
I know the difference between epub and kepub and am not a fool, so i know what is coming to my readers.

Every book you buy at Bol.com is also in your Kobo account, and Vice Versa.
If you turn on translation you can see it here: http://www.eburon.nl/wat_is_leesid
Changing account doesn't make you Dutch so you can't compare.

Again bought this book, this morning, trough the device https://store.kobobooks.com/nl-nl/ebook/zwart-huis and again EPUB, sorry guy !

They are migrated so much, that they even have the same action prices.
Bol.com : http://www.bol.com/nl/p/zwart-huis/9200000051330162/
Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/nl-nl/ebook/zwart-huis

So maybe if you buy the reader at Kobo, sign up,and don't buy with Bol.com you can still get kepubs, i don't know.
I also don't know if then can see with the ip number where u are coming from, all (or all that i know) dutch book to dutch customers are coming from "centraal boekhuis" which is the distributing company so maybe if you are coming from another country they will provide it from somewhere else, I all don't know, don't want to know, if I say I get epubs, i get epubs. Say what you get is still not saying what I get.

At the moment that the stream error was there, no one pointed out that 2.1 should work.
The recommandation was to upgrade to 4.
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1846664
So I upgraded to 4 somewhere in april.
I think that when they start using the new DRM again, they prevent you from using 2.1 like they did with 1.7 and 2.0.
Getting rid of 1.7 was a bit of a problem here, while using 4, the ascm still called the old one which was no longer there, I had to change something in the register.
For now, the books handled by Google books, going trough 4.5 is working with the latest drm plugin in calibre, so I leave it the way it is until really needed, thanks.

/Edit, several pages say: If you're using Adobe DE 2.1, come July you won't be able to read any newly downloaded DRMed ebooks until after you upgrade to Adobe DE 3.0. If you're using a preferred 3rd-party reading app, you won't be able to download any new DRMed ebooks until after the app developer releases an update.
Adobe stopped using the deadline june, but it seems to be clear that when using the new DRM means that 2.1 will no longer work at that time.

I am very surprised by all this. My understanding is that Kobo only syncs kepubs and their details. So, when you open these books, they are opened with the RMSDK, not the kepub reader? Which means they don't have the title at the top of the screen, only do page numbering for the full book and do not have the in-book reading stats? Does the reading positions and any annotations get synced between your devices?

That definitely says it is an epub.

Has this always been the case? Looking at the database you sent me a little while ago, all the books from Kobo seem to be kepubs. The only epubs have been sideoaded.

In order to don't bother people by going off topic, i put the answer in spoiler tags.
Spoiler:

I don't know when it started but looking in the database but it is at least a year... in June Kobo and Bol started migrating all accounts, the kepubs that they synced and you saw, where buyed long before but where synced because I bought the KOBO HD in June, I had forgotten to put them in the trashcan.
The "problem" is that bol.com had an agreement with Sony and even sold a special NL edition of the prs-t1, t2 and t3 and Bol was only selling epubs.
Then Sony stopped with the selling and they needed a new reader.
At that time Amazon Kindle doesn't sell e-readers and books in The Netherlands.
Bol.com has already contracts with almost all selling ebook company's which seems to be exclusive.
So they joined because Bol needed the readers and Kobo liked the agreements with the sellers.
So they migrate the shops, they still have their own looks, but they are the same, that means a book that I buy now at Bol.com is also on my "bookshelf" at Kobo.nl.
When I buy a book in the bookstore,or by the reader of kobo, it is also in my Bol.com Account.
The books sended in june at the database that contained Kepubs where bought before that date (i had forgotten to put them in the recycle bin at Kobo.)
Then, someone complained by a judge that this coupling between kobo and bol was not fair because they could take over the complete market.
So that is why they invented the leesid (ReadID literally translated) so every company that joins that leesid now synchronise with all the others that are joined.
The id behind was, when you have 20 different stores and you want to re-download, you have to log in at all this shops seperately.. now you don't have to do that any longer.
it is funny to see that some books are on discount on kobo facebook nl and they say: come buy now they are cheap, all 45% off called something like kobo november deal (by example) are on the same price at Bol.com called something like Autumn sell special

@Davidfor ( to avoid people to read all of it because it is offtopic, i put it behind spoiler tags)
Spoiler:

it is good to know that the Dutch market for books is a bit difficult.
Books are protected by law here, we have something like best translated as "bottomprice".
It is not legal to sell paper books under that "bottom price".
Also to reward writers and bookshops, books are charged with a low tax of 6%

But there are tricks, if you sell the same book as secondhand, you may get lower then this "Bottom price".
So Bol.com sells new books at the high price, but also sell the same books second hand.
They can do tricks with that,5 minutes after new books came on the market, they are there also for a secondhand price.
On the other hand, they also sell second hand books for an idiot high price, claiming that there are no new versions anymore.
They say this secondhand books are sold by normal buyers, but Bol charges them a rather high fee in order to sell the books on their site.
But sometimes second hand books are there within an hour after the release..

Ebooks are not seen as books, but "software" or devices.
The "bottom price" by law for normal paper books, don't apply here.
But, the tax on this books are 21%
You can imagine that not all writers like this form, because the paper books provide them with a steady flow of income while ebooks don't.
Most of the time when a new paper book comes out,the ebook version is cancelled and will come later with some stupid excuse.. so people that do want to read it badly, will buy the paper book.. which provide writers and publishers with a higher income.
Also a judge said (they are still fighting) that with an ebook, you get a "licence to read" and in former cases with software, when you sell the software secondhand with the licence and destroy every copy on your computer, the secondhand selled software is legal with the selled licence as long as it is the original package.
Bookstores say,an ebook isn't software..judge say it is.
So it is legal to say, I have read my books, I sell the ebook secondhand with the licence, and remove it from my devices..
But who can check that you really delete it ?? (also because you can't delete it from Kobo or Bol.com without retrieving it later.)

One of those sellers is Tom Kabinet, calling itself a reader club..you can buy "secondhand" ebooks for 1,75 when you are a member.
If you reselled your readed ebook back to them, you extend your membership with one week for free and can buy other books again for 1,75 (euro)
You can keep them to, but then you have to pay 3,99 a month membership fee a month.
For that 3,99 you can buy every book again for 1,75 and extend it if you return it as long as you promise to delete your copy.
So I can send the book of Stephen King from this morning to them and promise that I have deleted it from my reader, and all others can buy that book (4,99) now for 1,75
In return I can buy any other book, no matter what the price in a bookshop is,for 1,75
When I return the book, they remove all watermarks and social DRM, when I buy it back it will have a total different social watermark.

So all kind of constructions are used in our country in order to get and hold the market,so maybe that is also the reason of the marry between kobo.nl and Bol.com.

Just an example book:

I have a koboExtStorage directory on my SD card and a metadata.calibre and a driveinfo.calibre file on the SD card as well.

My main storage (internal) has a "koboExtStorage" directory, and contains a metadata.calibre, and a driveinfo.calibre file as well.

Anything is possible. Before I do that, here's some debug output (the tl;dr version):

For whatever reason, a combination of running the desktop Kobo application, reboot/logout or some other shenanigans influences the outcome. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It isn't 100% reproducible until it happens once, then I can reliably replicate it until I can't.
