I was wondering why people don't just keep the bottles (or a few 3 gallon jugs or something) and fill them from the tap, before hand? Less lugging around, at any rate.
Stay safe! |

Because our tap water is awful. You know it is hurricane and storm season. Bulk water is cheap. Unopened water has a shelf life of a year. Pick up the water in April. Or buy some jugs, fill them and use them all summer. We need water Saturday. I don't know if we will get 15, 20 or 25 gallons.

Well, Irma is predicted to cross western NC ... to the west of me ... unless it takes the track of Hurricane Fran ... which hit the Raleigh-Durham area head on .... Fran dropped a tree on my house in 1996 ... so Irma's path across NC is spooking me ...

Yeah, it was an absolutely beautiful day up here and I felt a bit guilty enjoying it, knowing what's coming for Florida.
Temperatures today topped out at about 72º (F), the sky was sunny with a few clouds (the kind of sky that was made for polarized sunglasses), and a very gentle breeze. I was able to get out on the deck for an hour with my tea and ereader. |

How many here have been in hurricanes?
I've been in three typhoons when I was a teenager living in Okinawa. Nothing in the US since I lived in the western half. |

They aren't unusual in NJ, but most have lost strength by the time they get to us.
Sandy, of course, was the big one up here, but Irene, Floyd, Donna and others have been memorable. Due to our location most hurricanes seem to pass us just offshore to the east. As a result we get some wind and rain, but some folks always seem to head to the beach to fish and surf, and the rip currents are deadly. A neighbor family had a daughter that they named Donna after the hurricane that almost kept them from getting to the hospital. (1960) |

Grey and drizzly, similar to yesterday. Though today there should be a chance that it clears up (temporarily) in the afternoon. At 14C it's chillier than normal.

Cat 1 hurricane when we lived in Wilmington, NC. That was enough for me Monkey. The rain literally comes in like a whip. It's sideways and it slaps the building making the most horrible sound. The air is so hot and humid it's like being in a hot sauna. The wind howls so loud. They cut the power and let us know it would happen. The apartment I was in literally rocked like a boat.
![]() It's more scary than any tornado I've gone through and I've dealt with many of them. Sent from my XT1528 |

I've been through too many hurricanes to count, living in NC. Fran was the worst - dropped a tree on the house (whilst I was in it!), without electricity for 6 weeks, bottled water for weeks (running water but needed boiling -- but no power, right?), etc.
It's a bizarre experience -- going to work in the city which got its power restored first, cooking and eating all meals there, and coming home at night to a dark, hot house with only Coleman lanterns. |

It's a lovely day, so I'm going to sit outside and read. My brother has battened down and readied to ride out Irma in Sarasota. His noisy little dogs are totally silent now (that started this am). They seem to know there is a bad weather system.

Cool with gusty winds ... outer bands of Irma to bring rain tomorrow, then gusty winds on Tuesday .... but nothing severe!
