And for anyone who doesn't remember their horror history, Ritual was the book which inspired the classic movie The Wicker Man. Reviews of both novels are somewhat mixed, but if you picked up the first one you might as well get the second, right?

To start with: The Sentinel by Jeffrey Konvitz is $1.99 at Amazon US.

The Sentinel is an under-rated book that I read years back and really enjoyed. I don't want to sell it as a classic, but it is a well done religious shocker from the '70's (when there was an abundance of religious scare stories).

I usually copy a synopsis from Amazon, but I'll write up this one myself.

A New York model gets an incredible deal on an apartment in a converted brownstone. The other tenants are kind, if strange. But there are mysterious bangings and noises at night And what's going on with the blind priest who stares out the attic window day and night?

There's a clever sequel called The Guardian. I read it, but don't remember liking it as much.

Dan Simmons' first book, Song of Kali is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I read another Simmons novel, Summer of Night, earlier this year and really enjoyed his writing.
