I had the distribution archives for the programs, so fixing the problem was a matter of putting thi directory where they live in the Do Not Scan list and installing fresh copies.

I wouldn't touch Norton A/V with a stick. Too many cases of "Does not play well with others", and harder to remove once you've decided it's a problem rather than a cure than a fair bit of what it's supposed to protect against.

I am bemused about how two A/V products from the same vendor should be so different in quality.

Missed the PilotBob comment earlier....that's kinda what I thought as well - frying pan into fire - but this is the free version supplied by Comcast so I've gone along for now. It's already popped up several annoying notices and added tool bars to my Outlook and browsers! as well as sticking it's nose in on my email scanner I've been using for a couple of years and is working fine....

Oh... this is your personal machine? I recommend you don't run anything on it at all. They are a waste of CPU cycles and money (even the free ones).

Spend your money on a good backup system like Crash Plan or Jungle Disk or Mozy or Carbonite instead.

I thought you meant Comcast's internal IT department was changing.

I keep everything backed up, but that doesn't stop viruses. I prefer to have at least something running in case something slips in with any of the public domain software I work with on occasion.

At work they are switching us to the Microsoft A/V whatever that is.....it probably IS A VIRUS!

Just to keep you posted: everyone crossing limps / toes / fingers /eyes or whatever for me : you can uncross now. And many thanks for your crossing support.

I did get the job - alas, it didn't quite turn out the way described. Instead of a contract for several weeks it's only a 20-hour deal (not 20 hrs / week but just 20 hrs). But, beggars can't be choosers and I will do my best to impress them enough so they hopefully call be back or even better, keep me.

Now I just have to get hold of them so they can actually explain to me what they want

It's still exciting even though the "20" is hours instead of weeks.

It would appear to be cake week at work. Right now I am ruining my appetite for lunch by eating a slice of a gorgeous chocolate cake made by a colleague's mum.

The cake I'm eating isn't on her website, but to give an idea, have a look at chocolate cakes here: http://thebestdesignercakes.com/

Katti's Cat & Nomesque, I'll trebuchet you some to celebrate getting the job and recovering husbands

(The cake is huge, and very, very decadently rich (it has chocolate cake, chocolate cream, chocolate whirls/flakes, chocolate tubes, chocolate cream icing, chocolate rolls and marzipan fruit), so I'm sure I can lob a few more slices of it elsewhere...)

I'll just be lobbing you a few vials of insulin! Can't imagine what your blood sugar is by now - although after a week of cake you may have acclimated to your new diet!
