![]() The yellow rose is not a place mind you. 6th avenue in Austin is a swell place to spend the best part of a night out. Have fun. |

LOL hi Beppe and Ivy.
It's San Marcos, and the mall is marvelous, if malls are your thing. Also, Austin is wonderful, so if you can get there, I second Beppe's recommendation. The Hill Country is my favorite part of Texas, well, maybe tied with Corpus Christi and Padre Island (on the Gulf). But above all else, be sure to get some good smoked brisket while you're in the Lone Star State. It's the main thing I miss about Texas... |

![]() Nobody else could miss her, Not half as much as me. She cried so when I left her It like to broke my heart, And if I ever find her, We nevermore will part. She's the sweetest little rosebud That Texas ever knew, Her eyes are bright as diamonds, They sparkle like the dew; You may talk about your Clementine, And sing of Rosalee, But the YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS Is the only girl for me. ![]() ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O09J...eature=related ) No wake-up music in my mind but when I got here, it certainly started up! When I looked for YouTube videos of it, all I could find were various pics of either sexy Blonds or white Pinup Girls... But the song is about a Negro woman... I guess that just wasn't socially acceptable to most of the South so they never realized it when it was adopted as 'Southern Music.' Anyway, good morning everyone! A bit cooler today and no rain predicted. I'll start it with a mug of Ceylon Uva tea and a dish of Babbaganoush and pita, with some feta cheese and Kalamata olives on the side. I DO love Babbaganoush but somehow forgot about it this past year. Easy to make and sooooo delicious! (Recipe in the Food & Drink thread.) Stitchawl |

LOL like most folk music, I think there's about 20 different sets of lyrics to Yellow Rose.
The one I was taught in elementary goes something like this: There's a Yellow Rose in Texas, I'm going for to see, Though other men have held her, her heart belongs to me, She's the diamond of the desert, the golden flower of Spring, The Yellow Rose of Texas, can make a man a King! After doing some research, I think "my" set of lyrics is later in origin than Stitchawl's. Last edited by phenomshel; 08-19-2011 at 08:30 PM. |

![]() Here is the version considered to be the 'original,' a hand-written manuscript from 1832 now in the University of Texas archives. .................. There's a yellow rose in Texas, that I am going to see, No other darky [sic] knows her, no darky only me She cryed [sic] so when I left her it like to broke my heart, And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part. She's the sweetest rose of color this darky ever knew, Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew; You may talk about your Dearest May, and sing of Rosa Lee, But the Yellow Rose of Texas beats the belles of Tennessee. ............... The song is based on a Texas legend from the days of the Texas War of Independence. According to the legend, a woman named Emily D. West — a mulatto, and hence, the song's reference to her being "yellow" — who was seized by Mexican forces during the looting of Galveston seduced General Antonio López de Santa Anna, President of Mexico and commander of the Mexican forces. The legend credits her supposed seduction with lowering the guard of the Mexican army and facilitating the Texan victory in the Battle of San Jacinto waged in 1836 near present-day Houston. Santa Anna's opponent was General Sam Houston, who won the battle literally in minutes, and with almost no casualties. ................. All this according to Wikipedia................. I luvs music! ![]() My first Coke Zero of the day. Ahhh..... And only one more left in the house! Luckily one of the local supermarkets has a BOGOF offer on six-packs, so I can stock up again. I can drink Pepsi if there's nothing else. But not any of the diet Pepsis. Urghh... far, far too sweet. Diet Coke's pretty vile too. |

Of course I noticed, but being a gentleman i put my attention on the food. Between you and me, me having the highest possible opinion on our petite, I think that she is behaving extremely well. Even better than that. A very smart kid. Pretty also.
