The Fisherman by John Langan. Anyone read this? It sounds good to me, but the reviews are mixed.

Not on sale. Just wondering about it.

Quote:
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story. Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It's a tale of dark pacts, of long-buried secrets, and of a mysterious figure known as Der Fisher: the Fisherman. It will bring Abe and Dan face to face with all that they have lost, and with the price they must pay to regain it.

I have almost the entire Mayfair / Vampire chronology in (mismatched) paper but I grabbed it anyway. Those books are too chunky for me to comfortably hold, especially after being used to my ereaders for years.

That's exactly the same reason I bought them. My First Edition Hardbacks are currently in storage. That first book in the series is GREAT!

I think it may be a time for a re-read.

Been on my wishlist forever! Supposed to be well revered.

From Hunter Shea's twitter:

Forest of Shadows: Book One: Jessica Backman's Death in the Afterlife
Amazon US $0.99

Quote:
The dead still hate!

John Backman specializes in inexplicable phenomena. The weirder the better. So when he gets a letter from a terrified man describing an old log home with odd whisperings, shadows that come alive, and rooms that disappear, he can’t resist the call. But the violence only escalates as soon as John arrives in the remote Alaskan village of Shida. Something dreadful happened there. Something monstrous. The shadows are closing in…and they’re out for blood.

The Exorcist's Apprentice by Mark Lukens is $0.99 at Amazon US.

I read and enjoyed Mark's Sightings a few years back (why aren't there more horror stories about UFO abductions?). I've also picked up Ancient Enemy and Devil's Island by him, but haven't read them yet.

Quote:
For centuries the Roman Catholic Church has employed a select few to investigate the most extreme cases of demonic possession, haunted places, and paranormal activity. Often, the calling of an Investigator is passed down from father to son.

After surviving a tragic accident, seventeen-year-old Danny Lambert is sent to live with his father, Paul, who is an Investigator for the Church. At first Danny resists the calling to become an Investigator, but after the horrors he sees, he agrees to begin training with his father.

Danny and Paul are given their first assignment together, the haunting of a house in a remote corner of upstate New York. Inside this house Danny will discover a horrifying, mind-blowing secret that will not only change his life, but how he sees everything forever.

The New Neighbor by Ray Garton is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
A terrifying tale of demonic horror close to home from the Bram Stoker Award–nominated author of Live Girls.

The Pritchard family is content enough in their home on Deerfield Avenue—until Lorelle Dupree moves in across the street. Their new neighbor is pleasant, and also astonishingly beautiful. She catches young Robby’s eye through a window while he’s in a very compromising position, and eventually, he surrenders to her advances. So does his father. And his stepmother. And many others on Deerfield Avenue.

But something about Lorelle’s seduction leaves them spent, even sick. Her influence begins to change them in shocking ways—and then the killings start. This new neighbor doesn’t just want their bodies; she wants their souls . . .

Seductions by Ray Garton is $1.99 at Amazon US

This was Ray's first book, published back in 1984, originally.

Quote:
In the debut horror novel from the author of Live Girls, a small town in Northern California finds itself at the whims of an old and hungry evil.

Donald Ellis is in a bad place. On a forced leave of absence from work, his personal life has also collapsed. But he’s certain that something else is going on—something dreadfully wrong with his town. People are disappearing, leaving inexplicable traces of what might have happened to them. And then there are the dreams—horrifying nightmares seeping slowly into even more troubling daytime visions.

Then Freddie appears on his doorstep—a strangely powerful young woman who tells him that his intuition is right. A dark force has taken over his once-sleepy northern California home. Creatures are roaming the night, hungry for lust, thirsty for blood, and knowing exactly how to satisfy their cravings.

To fight an evil that hides in plain sight, Donald and Freddie will have to push the boundaries of their own sanity—and risk becoming a part of the very shadows they seek to destroy...

The Spread: Book 1 (The Hill) by Iain Rob Wright is currently $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
An ancient land breeds a new threat…

The Scottish Highlands; a sparse, mountainous region some say was carved by the gods themselves. Few places are as untouched as this harsh, prehistoric landscape. It is no place for man.

But nestled deep within the wilderness lies a cottage, and behind that cottage is a hill…

When a group of friends travel up from Manchester and hire the cottage for a weekend of boozy fun, they discover a threat far greater than the harsh landscape and unwelcoming weather.

Something deadly lies upon the hill.

And it’s spreading...

If you love claustrophobic horror with a dashing of body-horror then 'The Spread' will knock your socks off.
The Spread: Book 2 (The Village) is scheduled to be published later this month.

Perchance to Dream by Charles Beaumont is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Beaumont was a writer on the original Twilight Zone, including one of the very best episodes, The Howling Man (the original of which is included in this collection).

Quote:
The profoundly original and wildly entertaining short stories of a legendary Twilight Zone writer, with a foreword by Ray Bradbury and an afterword by William Shatner

It is only natural that Charles Beaumont would make a name for himself crafting scripts for The Twilight Zone—for his was an imagination so limitless it must have emerged from some other dimension. Perchance to Dream contains a selection of Beaumont’s finest stories, including seven that he later adapted for Twilight Zone episodes.

Beaumont dreamed up fantasies so vast and varied they burst through the walls of whatever box might contain them. Supernatural, horror, noir, science fiction, fantasy, pulp, and more: all were equally at home in his wondrous mind. These are stories where lions stalk the plains, classic cars rove the streets, and spacecraft hover just overhead. Here roam musicians, magicians, vampires, monsters, toreros, extraterrestrials, androids, and perhaps even the Devil himself. With dizzying feats of master storytelling and joyously eccentric humor, Beaumont transformed his nightmares and reveries into impeccably crafted stories that leave themselves indelibly stamped upon the walls of the mind. In Beaumont’s hands, nothing is impossible: it all seems plausible, even likely.

The end of summer, 1986. With only a few days left until the new school year, twins Jeremy and Jack Schaffer are on very different paths. Jeremy is the geek, playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends Kathleen and Randy, while Jack is the jock, getting into trouble with his buddies.

And then everything changes when neighbor Mister Higgins is killed by a wild animal in his yard. Was it a bear? There's something big lurking in the woods behind their New Jersey home.

Will the police be able to solve the murder before more Middletown residents are ripped apart?

Thanks. I picked up both, though White Pines sounds suspiciously like the first in a series.
