I'm on the ferry from St. Malo to Portsmouth, on my way home from a holiday. It was very nice but I shall be glad to get home again.

you are very lucky you decided to take the ferry ! between the volcano and the train strike, it's chaos this weekend for travellers. but then, after your previous experience, i think you've already had your dose of problematic trips...

I am so relieved: we almost decided to go back to Portugal, and would have been stranded there.
The sea is beautifully calm and we're going past the channel islands, which look very pretty in the sunshine.

that sounds quite lovely. I took the ferry once to go to london, it was in early spring (still quite cold, especially on the water) and i was a bit worried because of the many delays which were making me miss my train on the other side, but i really enjoyed the voyage itself. i spent most of it outside even though it was freezing.

There's something about the smell of the sea that has a hold on me. Does it affect you too?

oh god yes ! it's intoxicating. i just love it. i went to spend a few days at a friend's parents house a few years ago, they live on the south-west coast near cap ferret (bassin d'arcachon) which is a breathtakingly beautiful region. it had been several years since the last time i was at the sea and the first time we arrived on the beach in front of the water i thought i could never bear to leave it again.

I love sea voyages. I think that at sea one is suspended somewhere far away from everyday activity and gently rocked by the waves. It's very relaxing.

And I don't have to go anywhere by train today. The little car is in the ship's hold and my partner will drive us home when the ferry docks in about 4 and a half hours.

yes, exactly ! it's really a wonderful sensation.

that is definitely the best way to do it.

no need to worry about unreliable trains.

Just reading your post makes me long for the sea. It's so far from here! The last time I saw it was two years ago and it wasn't quite the sea but the estuary of the St-Lawrence river. But still it was the same smell. (ennivrant) I don't know the equivalent in English.

enivrant is precisely what i wanted to say with "intoxicating". deauville or trouville is not so far from paris, you can take the train there for the day and come home in the evening, and i always promise myself i'll go for a day in the summer if i've got no plans to go away. unfortunately the summer here the past few years has been pretty erratic and it's hard to plan more than 1 or 2 days in advance and count on good weather. and it would be too depressing to go all the way there, and find it's raining.

so i've still not gone. maybe this year.

hehe... I live 2 miles from it. whenever I go to Seattle, I go by boat!

Having fun with Google Maps. I started with the Dominican Republic, because I read The Brief Wondrous LIfe of Oscar Wao not long ago and wanted to know where that it, then I made a small trip around Central America and the Gulf of Mexico, and moved over to Seattle to see if I could find KK. Now I'm wondering at the border between Canada and the U.S.: no matter how much you zoom in on it, it's still a perfect straight line
