Good morning, everyone! Wow! I guess I must have been dreaming about New York's new marriage laws last night! I see this morning that some of the more conservative folks are already hard at work to get it revoked! Must be difficult to be so uptight...

Anyway... breakfast today is with a big mug of Taylors of Harrogate's 'Yorkshire Tea' to accompany my rice and miso soup.

Welcome Stephen. Corona is a very nice beer, but, but, but... My Gad, Sir! You're British! Shouldn't YOU be the one drinking 'Yorkshire Tea.' After all, it's not for them wot's from Surry! Oh well... all in good time. We won't push you too hard since you're new. Don't worry. Resistance is Futile.

Gosh, I guess I just slugged down that tea! Didn't even pay attention to the taste. My bad! Better have another and be more careful this time. Then it's off to the tourist souvenir shops in Kyoto to pick up 'omiage' to bring with me for my trip to the States next week!

Not sure what that's all about, but closer to home for me, Malta has just legalised divorce! I didn't realise it was illegal there currently.

As of Sunday, same-sex marriage became legal in the state of New York. It is the sixth state to pass these laws giving legal protection to same-sex couples. Some 750 couples married in civil ceremony in New York on Sunday. Conservative groups are fighting the passage of the law, claiming various procedural inconsistencies for its passage. The lawsuit, in which New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom (NYCF) is the primary plaintiff, seeks an injunction on the Marriage Equality Act, claiming that open meeting laws were violated, campaign contributions were promised, and Senate rules on debate were violated in order to enact the law...

This reminds me of the early 50's and the Civil Rights movement giving the vote to Negro in the South. The Federal government said that everyone had the right to vote. Local governments said that voters had to pass a Literacy Test. At the voting polls, Negros were shown a newspaper and told to read the headline. However, the newspapers they were shown were Chinese newspapers... Being shown one and asked what the headlines said, one old ex-slave replied; "It says 'Blacks don't get to vote this year."

Thanks for the explanation. We of couse already have legalised same-sex marriage here, though there are anti-campaigners as always. Maybe if they spent their time doing good works, instead of intruding into the private lives of others, the world would be just a little better place to be...

Had not heard about the voting literacy test. Incredible .

We don't have same-sex marriage in the UK. We have marriage for opposite sex couples and civil partnerships for same sex couples.

This has required numerous legislative changes to amend laws and regulations, changing "spouse" to "spouse or civil partner", etc.

It's all a bit silly. I wish they'd just gone for making same-sex marriage possible. Now it's all a bit of a mess that will need sorting out again at some point.
