I am currently listening to On Basilisk Station by David Weber. The first 1/3 of the book is slow and somewhat boring. Really picked up after that.
I'm not thrilled with the reader's choice of voice for Honor Harrington. Sounds too little girlish. But, I'm over that... just letting you know to expect that. |

I happened to like her performance, though I see that a great many folks rather hated it. There is another version out there (from cassette I think) read by Madelyn Buzzard. I've heard part of it, and she does sound more mature and serious, but I preferred Johnson. |

I generally go for books that I'm interested in, rather than worry about the length of the book. I have such a backlong of books that it would take me over a month of listening 24x7 to get through them all. I have a several of audiobooks that I want to pick up, the new Riordan, the new Butcher and a couple of the new Weber books, but I want to whittle down the pile a bit first. Maybe in a month or so, I'll go on another buying spree.

Just completed King Kelson's Bride, the last of Katherine Kurtz's Deryni audiobooks in my list and the last of them in chronological order. Who knows, depending on how the Childe Morgan cycle does, they will go back and record the Camber Cycle.
Next up is Larry Correia's Swords of Exodus, the second of the Dead Six series. |

I just finished Linwood Barclay's most recent domestic thriller, Broken Promise. I'd been putting off reading it because I knew that it was going to leave loose ends that will be dealt with in a follow-up novel next spring, but I finally couldn't resist anymore. The story was fun to listen to, even though the part of it that was resolved was rather predictable.
This is another book that used what seems to be a currently popular technique of a first-person narration and a third-person narration by two different performers. (Happily, neither of them was Scott Brick, who seems to be the narrator on every other book I listen to in this genre!) Barclay reuses a lot of characters from previous books, which are usually set in an upstate New York community called Promise Falls. Most of the references to events in past books are kept vague, though, so it doesn't matter if you've read them. Now I'm waiting for Tuesday's release of James Kaplan's The Chairman, the second and last installment of his massive Frank Sinatra biography. Ohhhh, Frankie! |

STILL stuck in Tai-Pan. It's not that I'm not enjoying it, but I just don't seem to have much time to listen. And now I have multiple Audible books backed up to read.

Yup!! Got a couple coming up, so I'm covered. But meanwhile, I may just need to take a break from it and read one of the other books in my library.

I finished up Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, which was quite dishy and entertaining, although I had expected a little more substance - not that it was substance-free, just the balance was not ideal for my interests.
And what a relief, because having finished that, I cleared the decks of current listens for the first time in over two months! I've moved on to Seven Years in Tibet. Great story, pity the prose in on the pedestrian side. Still, I'm so glad of the change from my long-term listens. And Frederick Davidson's reading of Kidnapped was a pleasure as expected. Quote:

I'm going to stick to shorter works for a bit, where I can anticipate the end as I cue it up. |

Yup, I think I'm going to do that. I've got a little 10 hour read (a new Mercedes Lackey Valdemar book) that I just got, and that will be perfect to break things up. Then I'll go back to Tai-Pan for the trip next week.
ETA: I also realize I still have the Nadia May narration of Cranford to listen to. That should be fun and a good read. Sigh. Too many books, not enough time. I'm going to have to get serious about knitting again this winter. ![]() Last edited by CRussel; 10-26-2015 at 12:51 PM. Reason: added Cranford |

Started reading Closer to the Heart, the latest Valdemar novel from Mercedes Lackey. This story arc is a continuation of Mags' story, and I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. The narrator is Nick Podehl, and he's good, but not great. Still, certainly a change from the founding of Hong Kong! |

I'm now listening to The Violent Bear It Away by Flannery O'Connor, as both books I wanted to listen to next are awaiting a pronouncement from Audible about the November promotion before I buy them. |

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, although I may read some of it on my Kindle. It's the MR Book Club selection this month, and with everything else on my plate, I didn't feel like reading a 656 page book when I could be listening to a 656 book while solving jigsaw puzzles. It's pretty interesting, so far, with a government investigation into why all the children on a field trip fell into a trance during which their eyes followed some action no one else could see, a fellow who converses with cats, and a runaway youth named Kafka because, hey! why not?
