I've been hoping the Euro model is right, as well. Back when Sandy was a growing storm the Euro model was the first to predict it would make a "left hook," gather strength, and wallop us.

On Monday night the Euro model was calling for Matthew to turn further east, into the Atlantic. That still looks good, and other models are beginning to agree.

But I'll feel better about things early next week!

In the meantime, the dead hickory came down this morning.

It has cooled down quickly. Only a couple of weeks ago we had temperatures of over 30C, even last week it was around 20C. And the next week and a half temperatures will be between 12 and 15C. Last week my blanket was too warm at night, last night I slept under my very warm comforter.

At least there will be a lot of sun and only a little bit of rain.

Greetings from Space Coast Florida. After struggling all day yesterday to put up storm shutters without a lot of success, my neighbor came over and undid everything and correctly installed in less than an hour. 25 openings with 3 to 5 panels per opening. Now to make a final sweep of the yard to bring in pots, bird baths and feeders. I'm really dreading tonight. Sheltering in place. The first time I've gone through this alone.

Sounds like you live near my sisters. They can feel the thunder rumbling through their homes when a big rocket lifts off. I'm sure they're not looking forward to tonight, either. Here in Tidewater it looks like Matt is going to miss us with the worst of his mess, but we do have some dreary, rainy days on tap (like today).

Yes, the after effects of a big rocket launch are really noticible. If I (and my house) make it through the night, I am also really dreading the clean up of 4.5 acres with many, many trees as well as the absence of septic, water, and ac. After the storm, i will probably go to my son's house (his electric comes back quickly since he's on the same grid as a fire station and water treatment plant. His family went to Gainesville and he is on duty in the county emergency management center for the duration.

After floods, fires, tornados and hurricanes, I have decided if I have to be wiped out I prefer fire. The clean up is easier.

A lucky jog to the east saved us from the worst of Matthew. House okay- lots of debris and tree issues. No cell, no phone, no electric, no water, no septic. Hope every one along the coast above me is as lucky as I was.

We're waiting to see if a predicted un-lucky jog to the west will worsen its impact inland ... from heavy rains with 20 mph gusts to torrential double digit rainfall with 40 - 50 mph gusts, 30 mph sustained winds. This will bring the trees down ... and the power ...

We've parked the cars in the street (away from trees), and are charging all devices tonight. Whoever invented the gadget that allows you to charge phones, etc. in your car is brilliant!

Fayetteville has had over eight inches of rain!

I just got in touch with in laws to make sure they are okay because the town is flooded! It's a mess right now.

Their backyard has three inches of water right now.

Pooh check in please when you can. It didn't seem Durham got as much rain but still.

Sorry for the late check in -- woke up to a roof leak (Stella cat found it and showed it to me) with water running down a wall - fortunately not too bad - patched up for now (bless whoever invented wet/dry roof caulk) -- constant steady rain -- roads are flooding, storm drains filling up -- we're staying home all day -- wind gusts not too bad yet -- lots of small tree limbs down -- minor power flickers

Bands of heavier rain/wind gusts will move through all day and early evening

Probably 4" of rain or more since Friday -- my front sidewalk is completely submerged

Matthew is now down to a category 1 off the lower North Carolina coast, but we're already getting plenty of rain from him here in Tidewater, Virginia.

We're still having steady downpour rain -- nonstop -- for almost 18 hours -- now projected to continue overnight -- many surface roads flooded/impassable --

Take care WT Sharpe and poohbear_nc, and anyone else experiencing "Matthew-related" weather! It's original path would have had Matthew approaching us tonight -- instead, we just had a steady light rain all day, with light breezes but no real winds.
