Regarding the affiliate tags and "smile." prefixes . . . .
One difference that I see is that MobileRead affiliate tags (note the "mr" in the URL of items that we post) produce income for the owners of the site--which income allows them to keep MobileRead.com running. You and I don't have to pay, and/or endure annoying ads in order to use the service, because of those tags. It's a win-win situation. Anytime someone would use an affiliate tag other than MobileRead's, it takes money out of MobileRead's pockets. "Smile." is different. Using "smile." doesn't take a dime out of MobileRead's pockets. It goes toward a charity (I doubt that MobileRead would qualify as one (That wasn't intended as a joke.)). So, if a "smile." is not used, then Amazon retains the amount that they would have sent to a charity. MobileRead doesn't lose anything. The only entity that loses out is that charity that we care about. Which reminds me . . . . for some reason, "smile." is not always activated when I use Amazon. It seems that it works only on purchases on particular kinds of merchandise. I've got to look into that. |

It makes me wonder why they couldn't get a good traditional publisher to take them. However, I mentioned in a post several months ago that a friend of mine has published four books. He made almost nothing on his first two books, doing business using (a) traditional publisher(s), so he went the self-pub way on his most recent two books.
