SmartEject with the modification for running Sync Now before ejecting also works and lets you do it with one click (or keyboard shortcut).
This Action Chains solution has one advantage over using Smart Eject: the tag/column is set immediately when a book is sent, not when the device is ejected. This could matter if you do any processing after sending to the device but before ejecting the device.

It is also faster because nothing happens when the device is ejected vs Smart Eject's searches and RL's sync, but I don't know if this is significant.

Otherwise, you have to plug/unplug or run a NickelMenu function or action chains as suggested above.
But you have to plug/unplug to add the missing metadata so there's no need to sync when ejecting as the sync will run when you connect the second time.

I don't want to have to re-connect whenever I add books. Between the modified SmartEject (or an action chain with send to device and single edit) and NickelSeries I get all I really want on one connect.

How do you get the missing metadata on only one connect? You don't get the blurb. You don't get page numbers. You don't get reading time. You don't get subtitles.

Good question.

FWIW, I have no interest in a blurb, especially on device. I've turned off adobe page numbers but do get the number of kepub screens. The device appears to provide reading time, both when pressing the bar chart icon you can get at top of page and when sleeping. I'm not sure what subtitles means for a book, but NickelSeries parses subtitle metadata.

Update epub on device

Hey there. I'm using the Fanficfare plugin to download and update epubs of fanfictions to read on my e-reader and would like to have an up-to-date library on my device. So far, I've managed to get the whole library on my device using the reading list plugin, however, when a story updates and fanficfare downloads a new epub, Reading List doesn't update replace the old epub with the new one. Is there an arcane combination of settings to accomplish this and if not, do you have any suggestions of how I could accomplish it with other tools? Thanks very much for your time

Basically, you set the list in RL to sync to device with "Add/Overwrite all list items" mode and "Clear this list after sync" checked.

Then in FFF config Reading list tab, you can configure to automatically add updated/new books to that list.

There's a wiki page for FFF on using Reading List to both sync to device and maintain a 'To Read' list that's marked on the device. It's a bit dated, but I believe still accurate.

Settings screenshot because embedded image doesn't work?

I have those settings set in RL. However, when I then add a story to the reading list that I have just updated with FFF and do a sync with RL, I still have the old book when I open it on my ereader...

I think that's due to the Kobo, not Reading List.

I had a Kobo very briefly once and then returned for exactly that reason--it didn't recognize updates to existing books. Others confirmed the same thing.

But that was years ago; any current Kobo users who can confirm or deny?

You need to update the ToC with Kobo Utilities. See this.

The whole content of the book is not being moved to the ereader, not just the ToC. I can even open the book on the ereader in Calibre and see that it is a different version (still the old word count on the title page that fff generates) while the one in the Calibre library itself has the updated word count.

EDIT: Also, I did test to see if updating the ToC with that plugin would fix it, but it didn't

I tried that, but it didn't fix it. Also, when I open the book from the view in Calibre that lets you browse your ereader, it still opens the old version of the book with the old content, not just the old ToC. (I tried posting this before, but the post somehow got deleted.)

After adding a book to the list and calling Reading List's "Sync Now" with the device connected, click on 'Jobs' in the lower right corner of Calibre.

You should see a lines about "Send metadata to device" and "Update X books to the device" if the list was actually sent.

Have you checked that manually sending a book to the device is working as intended?

Tried that. The jobs are in the list and every jobs says "No details available." And by manually, do you mean by clicking "send to device" in Calibre? Because I just tested that and that also doesn't work.
