Last three books I read:
Wool omnibus by Hugh Howey - excellent! Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire - also excellent; great fun. The End of the World by Derek Landy - re-read; still as fun as it was the first time I read it in February. After a run of three very enjoyable reads in a row, I'm almost hesitant to pick up anything new again... haven't yet decided what my next read is. |

Finished reading 1635: The Eastern Front and moved right into 1636: The Saxon Uprising, both by Eric Flint. These are mainline books in the Ring of Fire series and I enjoyed them, though both tended to drag a bit in spots. You should read both back to back, since they're really one really long book, split in half. Time for a break, now. Maybe a Monster Hunter book. That should be fun. ![]() |

Just Finished:
- A Letter of Mary by Laurie R. King - I didn't like this one as much as the first two (and I didn't like the second one as much as the first), but at least this one didn't introduce supernatural elements into the mix. It starts out feeling like its going to be The Da Vinci Code with Sherlock Holmes, but soon it turns into a standard murder mystery and the Jesusy stuff gets set aside. Currently Reading: - Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick (9%) - Moby-Dick, or The Whale by Herman Melville (28%) |

I read the Farseer and the Tawny Man series, one right after the other. I could not put Robin Hobbs books down.

I finished Paul Christopher's The Sword of the Templar (#1 Templar series) yesterday. The story itself is okay, an action packed thriller, where the two main characters find a templar sword when one of their relatives dies, when someone tries to steal the sword and burns down the house they want to find out why. It turns into a wild trip around the world. It's a quick read.
However, Christopher's showing of of his knowledge (or good use of dictionaries and encyclopaedia) and info-dumping got irritating after a while. Also, the ending was very rushed and left some questions unanswered. I don't know if that was intentional to get people to buy the next book but I don't like it when that happens. |

I finished off Hornblower and the Hotspur, and therefore the Young Hornblower omnibus, not long before my library loan expires.
I've also managed to fit in a couple of the shortlisted Hugo novellas, "Countdown" by Mira Grant and "The Ice Owl" by Carolyn Ives Gilman. "Countdown" is backstory for the Newsflesh books which I'm really not a fan of. I found it less irritating than the novels because it wasn't narrated by an annoying idiot. "The Ice Owl" was a nice setting but a bit of a nothing story. |

While I enjoyed the Hornblower books, I enjoyed the Patrick O'Brien Aubrey/Maturin books far more. The depth of the characters, and the scientific and historical details (beyond the simple battle stuff) is far more compelling, IMHO. Highly recommended, though I'm not sure they're available from the library yet. (Haven't looked, I already have them all in both audio and pBook format.)

I just finished LOTR, my first time. Great book, although I feel exhausted now.

As for Wool, I went through the mess it was Calibre conversion from Word and fixed it up so it's a lot nicer now. After I read it and if I catch any errors and after I've fixed them, I'm going to try to contact the author and see if he wants a copy of my improved ePub.
