Quality Maid: A Georgian Romance by Mira Stables John Longden bestowed the names of three admirable qualities on his daughters: Clemency, Prudence and Faith. But when he invested in romantically titled mining concerns, he found himself in grave difficulties. His daughters’ efforts to restore the family’s fortunes in an age which did not encourage young ladies to earn their own living was met with strong opposition, especially from Piers Kennedy, formerly a Captain in the Royal Navy. First published in 1973 by Robert Hale Limited. Mira Stables is the author of much historical fiction, including The Byram Succession, The Swynden Necklace, and Golden Barrier. https://www.amazon.com/Quality-Maid-...dp/B07BQ3W2TZ/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Quality-Mai...dp/B07BQ3W2TZ/ https://www.amazon.ca/Quality-Maid-G...dp/B07BQ3W2TZ/ Last edited by Little.Egret; 04-07-2018 at 04:06 PM. |

All About Romance is doing their Top 100 Romance Poll again (last done in 2013).
Unlike the previous polls, they aren't asking people to submit 100 titles ranked in order (100 points for #1, 99 for #2, etc). Instead this year they have a list of 50 books to pick from and you can add an additional 5 titles not on their list. I'll be honest, only 1 of the 50 books they picked is in my personal Top 100 books of all time. There were two others I liked okay. Their choices skew historical though there are other subgenres as well. I am disappointed with the new format. Anyway, if you want to vote, here's a link to the blog post explaining the new format 2018 AAR Top 100 Poll or to go straight to the ballot Their picks are: Spoiler:

But then I didn't agree with 98% of the books they chose, so I am all for redoing it. |

I've read one book on that list. Most of the authors I've never even heard of and I've been a romance reader for well over 30 years.

I've read quite a few on that list, Kleypas, Quinn, Duran, etc. I read many more that are not on the list. Majority of what I read is historical so I am always glad when they do that list as its about the only one heavy on HR. I read a few contempo too, but its rare for me to find the good ones there. Lots of the new stuff is just not my thing as it seems so shallow and not deep now and way too much insta lust.
I think that is why some of those books, even though they are what 20 years old now, still end up as many favorites. They just had a epic-ness to them that is so rare to find now. And a slow burn built up. I have a feeling that once they are done with the new list, there won't be much on there anymore I am familiar with. I guess that is how it goes. More folks read the new contempo stuff now. |

I am the opposite as I read very little historical nowadays. I am more contemporary, romantic suspense, futuristic, paranormal, and scifi. I think limiting people to only 5 of their own choices will skew the results much more than having people submit 100 books. The poll tends to lean heavily on the previous polls because when people try to come up with 100 titles they often look at the previous poll to see which ones there they also liked. So it's always a combination of previous polls and whatever the current hot new reads are. At least that's the way it's gone the last few times. I only voted in the 2010 and 2013 polls and very, very few of the books I voted for made the final list. I've kept the list I made back when I first voted and have updated it every few years since. But I suspect I am in the minority. Mostly I do it because my memory isn't what it used to be and I know coming up with my initial list of 100 books was hard! Having Calibre makes it a bit easier. But one year I reread a bunch of books that had been on my initial list in 2010 and many didn't live up to my memory (I started reading romance in the mid-80s, so there were a lot of older books on my initial list). Some books I still love because of the nostalgia factor, but I know my list of current top 100 changed considerably from the first one I made. |

Our book club just gave away 100 books from romance authors of color to help take a stand against this. We can't be blind to this anymore. Kudos to AAR for realizing they goofed on this. Let more fans stand up say No More. Maybe Harlequin also needs to be called out for cancelling Kimani. I also think the AAR Poll that it was heavily historicals which shows how out of balance this poll was. I read mostly historical these days. Kleypas is amazing, Quinn too but to have a list so heavily on one sub genre is wrong. Why isn't Nalini Singh up there? She my top author next to Kleypas. Sent from my XT1528 |
