I have a free year of office 365 but unless it's amazing I doubt I'll renew when the years up. I have office 2010 anyway so I'll load that instead.

You can still buy the disk based versions.
They just offer the subscriptions as an option which makes sense for some businesses because those are floating licenses, not device-locked like the traditional disk-based licenses.
Depending on circumstances, subscriptions can be a better choice than owning. A lot like with Ebooks or movies.

Not to mention the accounting for the software. If you buy the version, it gets accounted for as a capital expense and has to be depreciated over several years (provided it's above the capital cut-off limit in your country). If you get a subscription, you can write it off as pay for it.

Maybe I am just a tad biased, and have viewed Microsoft and its history as the evil empire ! (As the star wars theme song plays in the background as I typed this)

Sorry for the bend going

Besides a subscription gives you other services like and Exchange server and a SharePoint server. Last I checked the best price I could find for a hosted exchange account was about ten bucks per month, which more than pays for Office 365 subscription.

I believe that's only true for the Business and Enterprise versions.

So if wanting the player free and intending to do a clean install; upgrade Windows 10 first, get this update, then do the clean install. It is in the shop for purchase otherwise (it is about the same price as Windows Media Player was).

On a first short play with it, it seems to be a satisfactory substitute for the DVD playing functionality.

VLC Media Player will play DVDs no problem and it's free even if you fresh install Windows 10.

No, Windows Media Center was much more than a DVD player.
I've got a million dvd players. What I don't have now is an off the air DVR with channel guide and ability to watch live and record tv using my networked DTV receiver/interface.

Do Not attempt to adjust your sets. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical, you will be assimilated.

Yes, I think most of us know that and alternatives have been oft stated in this and other threads. But there have been some in this thread who have been not wanting to miss the quick and easy player that was in Media Center and my response was addressing that, not trying to promote any particular solution.

I suspect that any of us capable of doing a Google search will find that there are several free Players other than VLC, including ones much slicker to use than VLC. I'll leave you and others to each vigorously promote their own preferred solution as being the only sensible one. The rest of us will pick our own favorite and quietly enjoy it.

(Of course, Windows DVD Player will not substitute for the few that remain using Windows Media Center extenders (as far as I know only Xbox remained supported and it is not at a loss for a solution) and those in the USA using Media Center with certified cable devices (as far as I know, I am not in the US, that only affects CableLabs devices)).
