Just Finished:

- Climbing Mount Improbable by Richard Dawkins - This was a pretty good book by Richard Dawkins about evolution. "The Greatest Show on Earth" is more of a page-turner, but I really enjoyed the chapters about spiders and fig wasps in this book.

Currently Reading:

- The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (37%)

- A Letter of Mary by Laurie R. King (0%)

- Moby-Dick, or The Whale by Herman Melville (28%) [on hold]

I just started Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World and already love it very, very much. For the fantasy, I'm reading Magic Kingdom for Sale / Sold! by Terry Brooks and like it too.

It was the worst series I've ever read. I'm eager to know if anyone can finish it!

I snagged that as a free audiobook earlier this year from the Guardian, its one of my top 5 reads (or listens) so far this year.

I just finished the final book of the Darkangel trilogy: The Pearl of the Soul of the World. It is one of the most magical and beautiful examples of a fairy-tale in the form of science-fantasy that I have ever read. I would recommend it to anyone.

Such a wonderful book! Besides being an interesting peek into this young woman's life, it's a great way to get introduced to philosophy!

Just finished the first half ("Book 5"). On to the last lap!

And I must apologise again to the film. One thing ("I do not fear the dead") I though they had Aragorn mis-quote was actually said by Legolas in the book. (And I think is given to Aragorn in the BBC radio series.)

But I think the film-maker's desire for spectacle overcame them in the section on The Paths of the Dead. It was very silly in the film, but I can see that depicting brooding horror and darkness is difficult visually.

I'm reading "Quicksilver" by Neal Stephenson. This is one of the best "fantasy" books I've ever read.

It is set in the intellectual and political furore of the Enlightenment in Western Europe, one of the most significant periods in the formation of the modern world. This is turned into a semi-real backdrop for a story that has lots of echoes with literature of the time. Very clever and funny (and educational if you are paying attention).

So I need to re-read to check that it's the film that's distorting them, and not my memory!
Well, I'm done.

That was a long, leisurely re-read. And on the whole, my memories were right, although in one or two instances I was too harsh.

A splendid book. And I also highly recommend the BBC Radio adaption.

Next: I think it must be Fuzzy Nation, John Scalzi's re-telling of the Little Fuzzy/Fuzzy Sapiens books by H. Beam Piper, which is the only book I've bought this month, using a 45% off coupon at Kobo Books.

"Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. Terrific naturalism of how the West differed from the Hollywood fiction. Dark, bloody, violent, and lawless. The character of The Judge is unforgettable.

Finished my second eARC in the last week. This was Fire Season by David Weber and Jane Lindskold. This is a YA entry in the overall Honorverse, and is a direct sequel to A Beautiful Friendship by David Weber which told the story of Stephanie Harrington's first discovery of TreeCats and ultimate adoption by Climbs Quickly/Lionheart.

Fire Season continues the story of Stephanie and Climbs Quickly, but is far less successful. I nearly put this book down half a dozen times, but eventually slogged through it. Somehow, it never become compelling or even particularly interesting. It isn't a bad book, just not nearly good enough to bother getting as an eARC. Save your $15 and wait for it to be part of a Webscription/Monthly Bundle. At best, this is a 3 stars out of 5.

Cool Earl Derr Biggers and Dana Stabenow

Booth is certainly a fine writer but he also takes a very long time to arrive at the meat of the story he is telling.

Next I'm going to read one of the following:

The Singing of the Dead, book 11 in the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow
Thuvia, Maid of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Black Camel by Earl Derr Biggers
Chose Black Camel by Earl Derr Biggers to read first. Enjoyed it a lot. Now I'm starting to read The Singing of the Dead, book 11 in the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow.
