"Countries do not exist where I am from. The discovery of the Higgs boson led to limitless power, the elimination of poverty and Kit-Kats for everyone. It is a communist chocolate hellhole and I'm here to stop it ever happening."

Man from the future is apprehended near the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.

"Mr Cole was attempting to disrupt by stopping supplies of Mountain Dew to the experiment's vending machines. He also claimed responsibility for the infamous baguette sabotage in November last year."

Ahh!!! That was sooo good.

From the link you provided:

"This isn't the first time time-travel has been blamed for mishaps at the LHC. Last year, the Japanese physicist Masao Ninomiya and Danish string-theory pioneer Holger Bech Nielsen put forward the hypothesis that the Higgs boson was so "abhorrent" that it somehow caused a ripple in time that prevented its own discovery."

I remember that tidbit from the NewScientist article last October entitled, "Time-travelling Higgs sabotages the LHC. No, really."

The NY Times piece referred to in that article can be found here.

I told my son about Mr. Cole's exploits and he said, "Perhaps he was a time-traveler." Impossible? The article ends by noting that "Mr. Cole was taken to a secure mental health facility in Geneva but later disappeared from his cell. Police are baffled, but not that bothered."

Collagen. It works. Trust me.

Reading the story of the time-traveling particle that went back in time to prevent its own discovery. As often in this case, the best part of the article is the comments

Well, I have been eating a lot of Jello lately, too. Most of what I've read said eating it doesn't work because there's no real mechanism for delivering the collagen from the gelatin to the nails, but I've filed it under the heading of "What Harm Could It Do?" I figure if law enforcement can test for illegal drugs using hair samples (which, like fingernails, are composed mainly of dead skin), why couldn't ingested collagen also be present?

Thanks for that suggestion!

Personally, I don't think the scientists who proposed the theory have an ounce of faith in its truth; but you're right: some of the comments are great. I'll go back later and read more.

.....Since when does nature give warnings when we are about to do something stupid?
..........— Doug on October 13, 2009 9:04 PM

.....Oh great, introverted fundamental particles suffering from teenage angst coupled with omnipotence.

But perhaps the most convincing warning of dire consequences resulting from the discovery of the Higgs boson comes from the gentleman from the future who was quoted in the cnet uk article as saying:

.....“The discovery of the Higgs boson led to limitless power, the elimination of poverty and Kit-Kats for everyone. It is a communist chocolate hellhole and I'm here to stop it ever happening.”
..........— Eloi Cole, Time Traveler, who was arrested while attempting to prevent supplies of Mountain Dew to the LHC's vending machines.

Well, to be honest I can't judge the theory itself, as I have not read the original study and I would probably be unable to understand it. But I did enjoy the comments. My favorite is this one:

Quote:
It's fun that the Higgs will go back in time to prevent it's detection, thus ensuring that it will not be found. Of course, if it's not found then there is no reason for it to go back in time to sabotage any discovery attempts and therefore it will be discovered. Whereupon it'll go back in time to ruin the discovery attempt - and it wont get discovered which means that it'll get discovered and ARRRRAGH.

By the way, I would be very surprised if the vending machines in Switzerland have Mountain Dew. And I've always wondered what it is, but since it apparently comes from the U.S., it's bound to have way too much sugar in it. I imagine, for some reason, sugared water. But of course, I'm sure there is a diet version with some kind of synthetic molecule to replace the sugar

Actually, that's the most convincing part of Mr. Cole's story. Since Mountain Dew is made by PepsiCo, a worldwide distribution seems plausible. And if any soft drink could serve as fuel for a 'time machine power unit'—which is what the time traveller was searching for when apprehended—surely it would be Mountain Dew.

Actually I'm waiting for the press release that explains that it was all an April Fool's joke.

The first link is an April's Fool's joke, but not the one about the Higgs I think.

And the reason I have my doubts about the Mountain Dew is that I can't remember seeing any in Europe, but I may be wrong about that. I'm pretty sure it's not sold in France at any rate.

I knew the proposal about the time-travelling Higgs was genuine, but I had my suspicions about the time-traveler. How did you you discover it was an April Fool's joke? There's nothing in the original article that's not plausible, and it wouldn't be the first time that someone has escaped from a "secure" mental facility.

And I have read something to the effect that the scientists who proposed the theory of the Higgs preventing its own discovery aren't exactly keeping a bottle of campaign on ice to celebrate when their theory is "proven".

I don't know it, but it seems obvious from the tone of the article, and from the date - but again, maybe I'm wrong

BTW, time-traveling sub-atomic particles are pretty much accepted as a component of reality by mainstream physicists. The arrow of time doesn't have much meaning on the quantum level. Richard Feynman wrote extensively about their effects. Some even believe that anti-matter is simply ordinary matter traveling backwards in time. According to that hypothesis, the annihilation that occurs when a particle of matter meets a particle of anti-matter is simply one and the same particle making a u-turn in time.
