Replacement K3 arrived today as promised. But now another defect - right page forward button doesn't work. So I've ordered replacement number 2.

On the plus side, the Instapaper delivery is great. 20 articles only cost 15 cents. I'm gOing to daily delivery.

I've seen posts where some people with the K2 had a hard time adjusting, but "new" users don't notice the buttons are narrower than they were so they just adjust to them. I've seen a few people who don't like the new..."joystick" five way toggle things.

One of the reasons I opted for a netbook was my concern over the size of the "keyboard" --plus at the time of my shopping, the K3 hadn't been announced with the new lower price!!!

So now I have my netbook and the keyboard is pretty small anyway!

I'm certainly watching all this feedback because I think I may opt for a k3 one of these days. Depends on how much I end up using the netbook and for what activities...

I'm still adjusting to the page turns. I keep pressing the directional key because it reminds me of my prs-300

So update since he's had for a few hours now. No comments on the five way button so guess he's OK with it. Only giitch so far is that the keyboard usage as froze the Kindle twice now. Will have to see if that continues and talk to Amazon support about replacing the unit as that may be a defect. The Kindle cover with light should arrive today.

The Amazon Kindle board has seen mention of *quite* a few "frozens." Methinks this will lead to a software upgrade (download) sooner rather than later. I know there was even a thread of comments where people were trying to figure out if it was all the same activity (keyboard versus other things) being done that cause the lockup.

I think it will get fixed. You know Amazon is looking at all the feedback and moving a mountain or two to try and smooth things out.

It'd be interesting to know if particular keystrokes or activities are triggering freezes, or if it's seemingly random. I haven't had any freezes in two days, but I'm curious to see if I could reproduce the problem.

That's pretty much what the thread on amazon was asking--what were you doing when it froze. I lost the thread, but when I see it I'll post a link back here. It only had about 8 replies; not enough consistency when I read it (and there were posts after that, but I didn't check back on it...I do have a life, no really...)

Ive had one random freeze so far, I was showing my daughter the text to speech at the time, it said a few sentences, went quiet then froze. But I had tried it before with success and again since with success, plus I had not long done a reboot before, so it could not have been a memory leak. The only difference was it had just woken up and I went straight to the book and did text to speech......

Indexing is a power drain. I wonder if these people are fully charging the battery before attempting to index or do other stuff. If they're indexing huge quantities of books, maybe low power is causing anomalies. It took me almost 2 hours of charging to get the green light; after that, I left the charger plugged in while downloading and indexing my books -- and I had no problems (which of course doesn't necessarily mean anything).

I bet Amazon will chase down the problem once they've tested a bunch of returned units.

The only time I've had stability or performance issues with indexing, I had duplicate files. Other than that, it's just been a battery hog.

I have seen others suggest it may have something to do with high use when the battery isn't fully charged--but some of the early reporting is going to be because people all happened to be trying to charge and do other things right out of the box...and so...more carefully collected data obviously needed. Over time I would think the clues would start to line up.

We can hope anyway!

Well, almost the same. Instapaper shows up on the Kindle as a single file, but it has sections. Not sure about Readability.

I use both. I tend to use RIL for things with a short shelf life, & read it on my iPhone. Politics, lightweight stuff. More long term, intellectually challenging, goes to IP.

That's a big advantage, to my mind. I have a p-subscription to The New Yorker and find it hard to justify paying again for a Kindle subscription, but with IP I can shoot individual articles from newyorker.com to my K3 via Wi-Fi for free. It's nice to be able to do that without plugging into the computer.

BTW, I don't suppose it's possible to share a Kindle drive on a home network? Wireless sideloading would be nice.
