I bought the Sony 500 years ago when it first came out.......if I recall, the Kindle was not even in the market then. Am I correct or was I just not paying attention.

I can't imagine Sony contacting Teleread weeks in advance for a presentation for anything other than a product announcement. I'm not aware of Sony hosting "funerals" for product lines.

I do wonder if Sony has any plans for additional product distribution. Now that Borders is also featuring the Kobo and Aluratek lines, Sony is going to need to cast a wider net to be the luxury reader. Department stores like Macy's carry electronics in the Christmas season. A display in their 800+ US stores wouldn't hurt.
If the new Sony's look better then the Kobo, then Sony has nothing to worry about from Kobo at Borders. Plus, if they look better then Kobo, then they will look better then Aluratek too. So no harm there. Sony will win over both if they look better.

One thing that will help Sony big time is if they use a newer version of ADE that also works with B&N's eBooks and has the right margin page number gone like on the 900. That would be a nook killer. So really, if Sony does things right this time, we'll see them do quite well.

The first Kindle came out not long after the 505.

I agree that including B&N support would be a big plus, and it is now easy to do with mobile ADE, but I don't see Sony doing this. If I am wrong, then it will illustrate that Sony is more interested in selling ebook readers than selling ebooks. This is the right strategy for Sony, although it makes them vulnerable to price wars on reading devices between Amazon and B&N.

If Sony does it, it would mean LESS sales of nooks for B&N and more Sony's sold.

Hey, I'd say this is the first independent confirmation that something is indeed in the works!

Hopefully Sony will announce the new models and the immediate availability of the apps for Android and iOS.

Agree that support for nook DRM would be a major blow to B&N (and Amazon as more people would choose the format supported by two major players in the field).

That might actually give them a chance at survival.

Since the B&N ebooks are formatted as such that they can be read by the newer version of ADE, it seems that is the plan of B&N all along. The nook might lose some of its advantages but at the end, B&N is selling more ebooks. This is the battle of the ebooks, not necessarily the ereaders. According to Jeff Bezos, the ereader device is just temporary to fill a gap.

I think it would be best if Sony dropped or sold off their Reader store and made alliances with as many bookstores as possible- B&N, Borders, W.H. Smith, etc.. Sony handles the hardware, the bookstores handle the ebooks. Hopefully one format to make it easier on the buyer.

I agree that Sony should open their hardware for additional stores, but why not keep their ebook store open, competition and more options never hurts.

I can already buy ebooks in epub format at Borders, Books-a-Million, Kobo and a few others plus the Sony store for my 900. But it sure would be nice if ebooks purchased at B&N were readable without breaking the DRM right off the bat.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised that he hasn't been recruited by Sony or B&N yet.
