Niven does, but money was a motivator. Part of his effort in his early days was to demonstrate he could make a living as a writer, and he refused to touch his "independent means" to cover his basic living expenses.

He did, as I understand it, dip into the trust fund to buy SF art, causing "It's not fair!" grumblings among those he outbid. Personally, I thought that was sour grapes. The artists were trying to make their living from art, and if Larry had the money to pay them a better price than other bidders, so much the better.

On suggestion from this thread, just finished reading all the giants books by James P Hogan. Good reads for the most part. Thought his writing was really good when there wasn't an antagonist. Could not stand the parts when the problem was the Jevs or Ents. The first 2 books and the first half of the 5th were great because of that.

One book I recently read and enjoyed in this genre is Tau Zero by Poul Anderson!

Oh, an excellent book. His "Boat of a Million Years" is also splendid.

Sadly, I can't find either as an ebook.

No, theres not a lot of Anderson in ebook. I have a couple of Novellas ('Security' for one) but no novels. I also read his Brain Wave from 1954.

You don't seem to have checked at Baen Books.

They have The High Crusade, Time Patrol, To Outlive Eternity and Hokas! Pokas!

And a wonderful sequence of omnibus volumes covering Nicholas van Rijn, David Flakyn and Domenic Flandry:
  1. The Van Rijn Method
  2. David Falkayn: Star Trader
  3. Rise of the Terran Empire
  4. Young Flandry
  5. Captain Flandry: Defender of the Terran Empire
  6. Sir Dominic Flandry: The Last Knight of Terra

But not Tau Zero or Boat of a Million Years

James H. Schmitz had some good stuff written during his lifetime. A good portion of his works are in the Baen free library for download now. Not quite hard SciFi but good all the same. One of his that I've been reading has a mixture of a galactic civilization and telepathy. He didn't produce a lot in his lifetime but it is good reading.

Hmmm, might have to check those out, altho I thought the Flandry series was fantasy. Some of it does look a bit juvennile, or YA to me too.

For hard scifi, my "go to" guys have always been Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven & Jerry Pournell, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, and Peter F Hamilton.

They actually do have "Tau Zero", renamed as "To Outlive Eternity" (which was the title of the original short story on which the novel was based).
