I checked on Viola, who is starving having been stuck in the fence for two weeks. She has shrunk so much that she has changed her name to Violin.

Viola kept meowing and calling in her soft trembling voice. She was quivering with fright after trying unsuccessfully to escape from the fence's frightening, evil wooden claws. The kitten knew she was in trouble; big trouble. Losing hope, another cry. She wanted to be out and walking, purring and playing. Why won't the fence let go now, why does it keep holding? "Meeow!" A most scared and sad cry. Of course Viola wasn't calling out to herself. She wanted someone to help her!

Sleeping, dreaming, jelly legged and relaxed......then, suddenly, a rapid pulse. A surge! The heavy daze was demolished away, the slumbering spell had been broken. Awake! Avalanche had heard the sad, squeaky cry. Running towards the door she knew that her friend was in urgent need of her. Reaching up; one paw was on the levered door handle as the other front paw pushed. She was quite adept at opening doors. Across the garden and over the flower beds in four seconds and at the fence. Stop! Avalanche stared wonderingly at Viola; head tilted to one side, and barked just once. Viola replied with a series of meek meows. The large dog knew the kitten was trapped, she pawed the ground next to the fence in protest. Agitated, Avalanche then started to stand up on two hind legs and fall forward and push with her front paws at the fence. This was repeated rapidly a number of times in succession (also barking loudly now). Each strike made a loud banging noise. The kitten was totally silent and motionless. The hammering against the ligneous locking intensified, Avalanche was getting quite frantic. Crackle, crunch! Something had snapped, but what?

Silence. Avalanche stopped, looked and wondered at what had just happened. She softly nuzzle her nose against the soft, little black and white face. A very soft meow replied from the captive cat. Wriggling, Viola shook side to side and tried again to escape from the fence. Her head slipped abruptly back so it was right in between the paling and the post, then exploded out from the fence altogether and she fell onto her side. The cracks in the wood away from the beams had created a little more room. Free! Free!

Viola started to tidy herself up. Avalanche came over closer to her and received a lick of gratitude on the side of the face. Then they went back inside the house to get a nice feed and a rest. They have been close friends ever since Viola's arrival. The intelligent and caring dog had always looked after and cared for her. They are part of a family!

Do I smell bacon?

And it didn't hurt that Viola had been so "starved" that she was a little skinnier now. Helps with getting un-stuck!
