There's no black flashes in the note taker until you exit, so ghosting remains.

e-ink screens would all suffer from insane ghosting if not for that black flash.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the ink's charge.

All I know is that the 600 I returned had a very faint afterimage of the screen before it. If you search on ghosting you will find others discussing this phenomenon.

It seems to me the sun fade and ghosting issues may be related. My sun fade prone 600 also had ghosting. The two units I have that experience less sun fade or imperceptible sun fade don't show any ghosting.

I also believe it has something to do with the strength of the 'black flash' charging the screen that causes sun fade and ghosting. If the flash isn't stong enough you get fading/ghosting. Just my unlearned opinion and .02 cents.

I have some ghosting on both, my 505 and 600. But I tried both in direct sunlight and they don't show any fading whatsoever.

Just discovered (was surprised actually) that my 300 mildly washes out when in direct very strong sunlight. (earlier I was reading fine in a car, even in a direct sunlight, but behind the window glass) Effect depends on the angle though, if it's less than 30. Otherwise, it's a great screen, brighter than on my 505.

What's Sony's policy on this, do they accept it as a flaw?

My 300 fades very slightly under the sun. Since the issue seems to have spread across different generations and models of Sony Readers, could it be related to Vcom adjustment? As far as I understand from the PRS-300 service manual, readers have to be adjusted for each e-ink display during assembly.
From the service manual: Vcom voltage for the display panel varies for each panel. Vcom adjustment is required when replacing a board or panel.
Maybe low Vcom values reduce the 'stickiness' of black ink?

OK -- I'm afraid that was too easy. I bought a new PRS-600 from PC Richard last week and the unit does fade in the sun. So I bit the bullet and called Sony Support today for the Advanced Exchange. All I did was mention the sun fade issue and ask for an exchange and the Sony rep immediately started collecting my info: date purchased, name, address, serial number, credit card, etc. Absolutely *no* runaround about whether sun fade is an issue or not. Then he gave me an email address to forward my receipt to, and reference number, and that was it! Will I really have a new Sony Reader on my doorstep tomorrow? We shall see.... Fingers crossed that it doesn't fade!

What's that advanced exchange?
I tested my unit last Saturday under the sun and noticed it does fade (not as bad as the pictures posted in this thread, but it does fade, I'd say about 20% dimmer under the sun). So, my unit being 2 months old and still under warranty, I called Sony. But I need to wait for a prepaid label (that I'm guessing they'll send me) and then send them the unit to Laredo, TX.

My PRS-600 fading sample. Left side exposed to direct sunlight (line of sight to the sun, no glass obstruction) for 30 seconds, right side shaded by cardboard.

Is this the best Vizplex e-ink can do, or does anyone here have firsthand experience with no fade at all in direct LOS sunlight?

I exchanged the above PRS-600 with a new one and the replacement does not fade at all under intense direct sunlight. Serial number of faded device is 1512xxx, serial of the fade-proof device is 1388xxx. A friend of mine who has a fade-proof device he bought in 2009 serial is 1106xxx. Seems like earlier batches are more likely to have fade-proof displays.

i haven't been keeping up, so maybe this has been mentioned, but I found that my reader only fades if I turn it on or "turn" the page while in direct sunlight. If I flip it away from the sun when I turn the page, its fine - even after I put it back in the sun. It can sit in the sun for hours without fade unless it tries to refresh the screen.

That is the problem people describe.
