Gotta throw a few compliments in there too...

"say, thatʻs a mighty strong hairy back leg youʻve got there!" or "oooh, a hairy back! How I love hairy backs!"

you know, something nice.

I think I'm going to use the phrase "humping the buffalo" in future, to describe when someone is over-familiar or presumptuous without having done the groundwork...getting ahead of themselves.
Cheers,
Marc

It's not really about being screwed - it's more about, let's say, a cold caller who says something like "Hey, Marc-o. Can I call you Marc-o?"; or a new acquaintance or workmate that asks you to help them move house; or an aunt that insists on coming to your "small [and necessarily inexpensive] wedding reception" even though you haven't seen or spoken to her in twenty years; it's about all those workplace birthday cards and chip-ins for cake you've had to sign and contribute to for people you don't like and cake you won't eat; it's about workmen helping themselves to your fridge without asking; it's about ski lodges assuming you'll want to sit with a group of people for dinner.

It's basically about people taking liberties, from a poorly-assumed, ahead-of-themselves status of acquaintance between you. So, if someone I once knew 15 years ago at a former workplace looks me up on Facebook and, remembering we'd occasionally have empathetic conversations about our employment environment, says "Hey, I might come up and stay at your place for a week of par-tay-ing. Great, yeah?", I'd say they're humping the buffalo.

Cheers,
Marc

Love it Marc- you are a smart cookie. Or am I humping the buffalo now?
But will include it in my repertoire as well.
