I love Foucault's Pendulum!. It took me a few goes to make it all the way through Name of The Rose without skipping bits, though. And I haven't yet managed to finish "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" (partly because I keep putting the pbook down and burying it under other books...)

I reckon the first thing most people read is the title.

They may be in the book but they are not in the novel, which, presumably starts after the title page. But then that makes the first word of Moby Dick "Loomings", doesn't it? |

Silly boys, titles are not the book text, merely guideposts, flags, traffic signs.

I think I've tried 'Heart of Darkness' about three times. Unable to get past the first couple of pages.
Also agree on Charles Dickens' 'Tale of two cities'. Two very boring stories. Classic, I've found, does not equall great (or even good), and I'm glad I'm not the only one with that sentiment around. |

I just finished reading "Sons and Lovers" and was a bit appalled at the clear evidence of re-writes and all the seams and stitches exposed. I enjoyed the book and understand its place but guess I expect more from something so highly rated as a classic.
Sure there are going to be flaws in any novel, but this one could have used a bit more smoothing/editing.... |
