Be aware that Preferencelugins is the initial, first connect default.
Once a device has been used, the driver config is stored in the configuration folder. That is the one that gets updated by right clicking on the device icon(when connected) or the KU icon

Personally, I just find it easier to use Kobo Utilities and click on Configure driver (using calibre 8 where only the one driver exists). If you want kepub on the fly, make sure that epub is listed as the first format, kepub as the second and Use Kobo Viewer or EPUB books is checked (In my case, I also use a template that sends most books as ePub and the few as kepub).

But you have to remember that the driver is a plugin and you have to configure it (totally conterintuitive for me, I'm like that).

What I think would be a really good idea would be for calibre 8 to take the settings from KoboTouchExtended and migrate the settings to KoboTouch and mention which settings would need to be migrated manually. That would solve all of these questions about what happened to my collections and why am I not getting KePub.

And where do you propose it to be mentioned? That people reads it and it's aware, I mean....

Jon; at this point the boat has sailed. Decisions have been made and implemented; more confusion will arise if they are changed now

There's no way to separate out the Kobo settings for multiple devices, right? I wanted the cover art to have black borders for my wife's Clara BW, and white borders for my white Libra 2.

You would have to have two copies of the same eBook and edit the CSS for each to give you want you want for the cover.

AFAIK The cover is added/updated on the fly when transferred, with its own styling inline.
or does the driver do something different??

I see the option in KU when configure (the forms title says for Libra2).
I am going to now try my Aura 2 . . .
While the form title says aura 2, it is the same config

(I don't really care. I was testing for an answer for the OP)
KU extended is aware of serial numbers, so even if there were 3 Libra 2's, it can handle them individually. Can the driver be made smarter?

When I send ePub to my Libra 2, I don't have the cover changed. If I wanted to automate changing the cover, I'd use the Modify ePub plugin. But I cannot see how to do what @fogice wants to do on the fly.

In case anyone had the KTE drivers installed and has forgotten what settings they had, they can be found in the calibre config directory in the file device_drivers_KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED.py.json

Calibre Prefs > Metadata plugboards > Add new plugboard

Then fill in 4 columns:
Format: any format
Device: KOBOTOUCH
Source template: program: raw_list('authors', ', ')
Destination field: Authors
Press [Save plugboard] button
Press [Apply] button

You may need to Restart calibre afterwards, but next time you connect the Kobo to calibre all the Author data in the Kobo database should auto-magically be adjusted according to the new KOBOTOUCH/Authors plugboard.
I've been using this for some time. I am now noticing that the MyBooks>Authors list on the Kobo uses the last name of the second author for alphabetical placement in the list. Is there a way to force it to use the last name of the first author? Or is that controlled elsewhere?

I'm not sure if it was always this way or if something changed.

In my new KEPUBs the spacing between words in justified text looks really messed up now around punctuation sometimes. Did not have this problem with ExtendedTouch's conversion before.

In particular, note the line that goes "escalated. Focused and..."
