Does anyone else notice uneven warm temperature lighting in the top menu bar area? Also, l noticed that the eBook bookmark tag behavior / animation happens in 2 steps now unlike any other NOOK device where a bookmark only has 1 animation when removed. I noted Manga and comics have the same old bookmark folded corner 1 step animation. Not a deal breaker but inconsistent. Also highlights are still hard to see. My eyes are getting worse, so it bothers me more lately that I cannot see it. Otherwise I love it.

I didn't do anything special to my GL4+ in setting it up, and when plugged into my Windows 11 PC, Calibre recognized it straight off and allowed me to sideload books onto it.

It's a nice piece of hardware. Feels good in the hands and, for me, the buttons are easy to use and nicely placed. But it's probably going back due to the limited customization in terms of layout and fonts. The narrowest margin setting is, for me, way too wide. The choice of fonts is quite limited. And I hate that I don't get my book cover as a screen saver. Since it's Android based, I may try to root it and/or simply install MoonReader+ and see if that makes the whole package more attractive. But neither will fix the screensaver issue (I don't think). All in all, it makes my Libra 2 look all the better (what I really want is a Kobo Forma with the DPI and clarity of the Sage or Libra 2). Plus, with the patches, I can configure tap zones and buttons on my Libra 2 to all page forward, which I really value. There is no tap zone customization available on the GL4+, and the only button customization is to choose whether the top or bottom buttons are page forward. Probably will return to my local B&N. By the way I ordered with standard shipping (in NYC) and it arrived within 2 days. Last edited by rogerinnyc; 09-15-2023 at 12:54 PM. |

I don't care if the nook is the fastest reader ever. The firmware is one of poorest. It's just dreadful.

The last 7.8 Nook it took caliber a while to update to recognize it. I remember reading review articles of people complaining on caliber not recognizing it

And several of the those mentions were well after calibre did recognize the device from people who had not updated their calibre installs.

Installed the latest version of Calibre (6.27) and my GlowLight 4 Plus still isn't being recognized. Hmmmm Edited to add: Windows 11 found it! MacBook Pro does not. Last edited by christianbk; 09-22-2023 at 07:56 PM. |

I don't have a Windows machine, so at the moment I'm still using Android File Transfer to copy books over. (Before anyone asks, I haven't got AFT running at the same time I'm trying to use the device with Calibre, and I disabled the AFT agent that causes AFT to auto-launch when you plug in a USB device, to no avail.) I suppose I should post something to the Calibre support forum but I know other people have gotten this device to work on their Macs so at the moment I'm assuming it's something to do with my setup and am still fussing around to see if I can figure it out on my own without bothering Kovid ...

I posted some updated connection debug for my GL+ after applying the latest update from B&N to it again, and Kovid responded with another code change (apparently I should have mentioned that Android File Transfer is able to communicate with the Nook ...), so hopefully the connectivity will work with the next Calibre update. We'll see!

I wanted to mention that since the latest firmware update, I haven't experienced any lockups. That's nice. I had a handful previously and it was a little annoying.

I decided to pull the trigger and add the GL 4 Plus to my collection! Since its firmware is based on Android, I have spent a little time seeing to what extent I could make use of that. I have installed a simple launcher, a browser, and a few apps. This is without rooting this device. They all seem to be working so far. My device won't connect with Calibre, though my Mac "sees" it. Android File Transfer comes up right away. I could install Calibre Companion as a way to address the connectivity issue. I haven't done any actual reading with my new device yet, so I don't have a sense of how that is. I like the size of the display. The bezels are fairly wide, making this device wider than my Boox Tab Mini C, which has the same display size. The buttons have a nice feel to them. I don't like the N button (or image) at the bottom, which is supposed to serve as a home button. It usually takes two or three tries to get it to work. I haven't tried any audiobooks yet, so I can't comment on that. Generally, I like what I see in this device, but I'll have a better feel for it once I spend some time reading with it. |

I don't understand why others say Calibre doesn't recognize the Nook GlowLight 4 Plus is plugged in to a Mac. Perhaps we mean something different? On my computers (Mac OS Mojave, Monterrey, Ventura and Sonoma), the NGL4P caused Calibre to ask "Connect to this BNRV1300 device?" or something like that. Then, I selected OK and it showed up in the same way as any other eReader I connect and send books to. Android File Transfer also recognized it, but I never use it for transferring to the Nooks I have anyway. |
