Can you read complete books on an LCD screens?

What strange post. I feel the need to be sarcastic for the same reasons you feel the need to publicly feign interest in my well-being. But to answer your question: I'm feeling quite well, thank you. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and this has all the makings of a beautiful day. None of which has any bearing on whether or not I will choose to employ sarcasm during it. You are apparently referring to the brightness of the light in a lighted eInk reader? An LCD must be used with it's backlight, but use of a light built in to most eInk readers is purely optional. How do you read paper books?

For reading in bed, or in a dimly lit room, factoring in ONLY comfort to my eyes, I'd prefer good paper and a good reading lamp.
Next, adding some factors of convenience, I'd prefer an eInk reader with contrast and clarity comparable to paper and good reading lamp.
If convenience, and not disturbing my wife with a lamp, is weighed more heavily, and the choices get down to a lit eInk reader or an LCD reader, I'd prefer the eInk for eye comfort. But I agree, I wish our Paperwhites would be a little dimmer. And whiter. And sharper.

In the dark? With great difficulty.
When I say dark, I mean with no lights on at all, so the eInk backlight isn't optional, it is required.

With EInk, backlight is impossible - because the EInk module is completely opaque.
EInk lighting is always lighting from the front.

No, it's not, You can turn the screen light off and use a book light of some sort like we all did before lit readers existed. I still do, often, since my main reader is still my KK. I think I made it clear in my post, as if it were necessary to do so, that SOME light source would be needed to see, but it does NOT have to be the light built in to the screen.

Each layer, including the light guide reduces the contrast - a weak use of the front light increases it again.
But the essence of EInk is that it works without internal lighting.
I never read - like a paper book - without ambient light; it should be there.

No, it being obviously true makes it's true. Try this: Look a wall illuminated by a bright light bulb. Now look right at the light bulb. See a difference? If you don't, you're blind or lying. If you do, let's move on.

Sigh.
Some sort of light is required.
Any external head torch or similar (which I have used in the past) would be less efficient that a back/front light. it would cast more light, in a less well directed way.
None of this quibbling changes the reality that when in darkness, reading on my phone is much more pleasant than reading on my eInk reader (or reading a paper book), as the lighting level is lower, and the contrast is higher.

Clip on lights never worked for me.

My first lit reader was a kobo. Since then, I do not turn on room lights to read on an ereader.

I also do not turn on room lights if I am using a computer and do not need to see anything but the screen and keyboard (almost always the case).

I set up a special ambient light for television watching about 25 years ago and had to replace the bulb from time to time. I got an OLED TV in 2015. The ambient light bulb failed again shortly after I got the OLED TV. I didn't immediately replace the bulb. After a few nights viewing like that, I decided to always watch TV in an unlit room.

Looking at a backlit LCD is not the same as looking at a bright light bulb.

Maybe it hasn't gotten through to you yet, but there is a qualitative difference between direct light and reflected light - and don't come with the photon nonsense; you don't know exactly what it really is yet.
