Who will buy the Oasis 3? Probably 98% of those who bought the Oasis 1 and 2.

Not guilty as well. This will be my first Oasis; in fact I almost feel guilty having for having splurged (or rather my wife in getting this for my b-day) as I have a Voyage, and I am an avid ereader and audible user, too.
I hope the Oasis will charm me into not feeling this way. |

Somewhat guilty. I picked up a used Oasis 1 off of eBay last year. But I have gravitated towards using a Kobo and a Nook for the warm lighting feature. I'm just too heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem to leave. And I keep on buying new books all the time. My iMac updated the Kindle app to where I can't load the proper Amazon format to allow Calibre to remove the DRM from the books. And for those who say they don't need the glow/warm lighting have never used it. It's a very much needed feature and a shame Amazon took so long to bring it to market.
On my delivery, I received an email yesterday giving an updated arrival date of today. Amazon's website shows it's shipped. UPS's only shows a lable is created. Let's see what becomes of this. But this is piss poor planning for Amazon to miss this many shipments. Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using Tapatalk |

Of course I'm not saying it's not a needed feature... for other people. Not for me, though. |

As you have a physical Kindle, you can always use the Download and transfer via USB option on the Amazon My Content and Devices page. That will give you a file it's possible to remove the DRM from.

Mine arrived about an hour ago. It seems a bit lighter in weight than the O2, but I don't yet have a cover on it.

Ever since I jumped ship and bought a Kobo I have no interest in the Kindle, except for testing books I've made. The UI and functionality of the Kobo is far superior to the Kindle. I have to admit though, the Oasis was a big improvement over the ancient Kindle Touch I had which was collecting dust.

The Sonys were sold here too years ago, and I got the same feeling from them. Preferred my Kindles. Dunno, possibly I'm just too used to Kindles. |

Agree. I'm a big proponent of adjusting the screen/page just how I like it - font, font size and weight, margins, etc. Kobo far surpasses the Kindle in user ability to configure the text to their liking. However, I find I can now come very close to getting the Kindle page exactly how I like it by adding my favorite font, adding a FONT_RAMP file and using Calibre to make the other changes I want (margins, etc). With my current setup the only real difference now is screen size (I have a Kobo Aura One).

Re Kobo v Kindle, I think one reason Kobo has fans is that it is more customizable and ‘open’ to hacks, friendlier to side-loading etc. Kindle is more of a closed system. Like Android v iOS. Trouble is, some things (like note export I think) REQUIRE you to muck around with editing config files or calibre plugins to get it the way you want. Not for me, I’d rather read than muck around with my reading device.
And yes, Kindle UI has a bit of Frankenstein’s monster quality. The conventions are not carried out consistently, buttons on the devices that have them are not as functional as they should be (often do not page or scroll views). But most people adjust or stop noticing in a short time. Right on through the Kindle Touch, it was pretty clear that the competing devices all offered better UI and feature set. But that gap has closed considerably and is mostly moot now. Lurking on Kobo forum here, it seems its a lot buggier and there’s more regression than with Kindle. But Kobo developers (at least used to) check in here. The Kobo mobile apps are feature-deficient and the updates mostly consist of bug fixes (and there are many such updates, suggesting they are letting users test things). For example, no 2-column landscape mode on iPad, no Split Screen support, no Speak Screen or VoiceOver support, no way to read 3rd party books with it, etc. |
