I see what you describe occasionally, but, I'm pretty sure only for sideloaded books. That might just be because I read a lot more sideloaded books than purchased and make more annotations and bookmarks in the sideloaded book.

What I think is happening is related to how the position for bookmarks are stored. Basically, it stores the position in the book of the first character on the page. A couple of examples of this are:

The "point" is a walk through the tags. The "302" is a count of the tags within the body tag. But, it is counting the opening and closing tags at the same level. That means it is the 151st tag. The "115" is the 115th character within that tag. The second one is the next page and it just happens that the page starts with a paragraph so the character is zero

I think what is happening is that the calculation for when to display the dog-ear has a bug in it. Sometimes it doesn't get the calculation right. In my case, both of the above are displayed when I reopen the book. But, if I increase the font size, the first one disappears and the second one is still there. Return to my original size, and both are there. If I increase the margin by one step, both disappear.

As I said, I've seen this over the years, but it hasn't bugged me to much as I don't use the dog-eared bookmarks much. When I do, it's to be able to return somewhere using the annotations list, so the lack of a display doesn't worry me. Other than suggesting you report the problem to Kobo so that they know about it and that it concerns someone, I don't have a suggestion for handling this.

Yes after fully erasing it, it defaults to the new empty system. I then upgraded to 4.7.10413 and installed 1 ebook. Same thing.
Just wanted to make sure it was not a problem imported from other sessions.
I never faced that problem except with 4.7.10413

Now I tried what was suggested below, other font sizes, fonts, and line spacing. No difference.

I was wondering why after doing a factory reset, he was reformatting the exposed partition. It's already been erased and reset back to factory. Why force recreating the files again?

Deleting the .adobe.digital.editions directory won't have any effect until you try to authorize the device. At which point, it get interesting since Adobe wants the device file in that directory.

I know that... I'm a software engineer and system engineer since 1980... so I am well aware of all this. I just wanted to make sure that an out of the box virgin Kobo would not track former settings that would screw things up.
Looks like it's not related to the system, not even the books themselves...
Then I imported everything from a Kobo Aura (1st generation), including exporting the SQLite content and importing it to the H2O...
Nothing changes no matter what kind of "environment" I set... :-(

So my Kobo Aura had this problem and I returned it.
Yesterday and after a month waiting, they gave me a new one aaaand...the new Kobo Aura also has this problem.

I have read the thread but I'm very confused.

Is there any way I can manually correct this bug? By changing something on the Kobo files?
Should I go to the place where I bought it again and ask for another one, again?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's not a problem with the hardware. It's a problem in the latest firmware. You'll have to wait until Kobo fixes it and releases a new firmware.

Kobo don't announce firmware releases in advance. There is always one around the time of a new hardware release. But, they seem to be trying for a release every two or three months. My guess is that will see an update some time in March.

Thanks for the replies.

I just noticed that my kobo aura is not even counting the hours/minutes I read.
The only book finished was the instructions manual. I've finished 2 books since and after erasing them the counter goes back to 1. For some reason only the instructions manual counted as a book.
This is what's happening to everyone right, or is this just my device?

As mentioned, the current firmware has a bug were it isn't recording the times read.

The books finished is not a count of how many books you have read using the device. It is a count of how many books on the device are in the finished state. Removing two finished books from the device drops that count by two.

Is this new functionality? My reading stats say 175 books finished. My books/library has 60 books. I remove books when I've finished them, so there are no finished books in my books/library.
