Maybe that's it. They'll tell me. Good folks over on SFF.Net. They host a lot of SF writers, and treat us well.

And this thread is a good example of some of the work needed to turn a book into a viable ebook with multiple formats. Well, minus all the individual work done by the actual formatters (not a minor concern in itself).
All this even with what was basically a good source file, the authors cooperation, participation and knowledge of what it should be, and a large group of experienced ebook creators in their specialized formats. Is it any wonder there seems to be trouble with large publishers that just run the manuscripts though the formatting programs and call it good? It's nice to see someone actually concerned about the quality of how their final product looks and is presented. Good job. |

Jeff, the zip file worked fine. Thanks. I've added my tip to your jar (although it will be quite some time before I actually get to read the book -- I'm in the middle of a series now).

Mime type was my guess, too, and that's consistent with the results of your other experiments (made up extension, no extension). But I'd just stick with the ZIP file since that's working.

Heard back from tech support at 1 a.m. (love those guys). That was indeed the problem. They're looking into setting that up. But meanwhile, I guess the zipfile is doing okay.

So, I have learned something as well. For some reason (as I posted earlier), I didn't think that the server content type setup mattered for straight right-click downloads. Upon reflection, that doesn't make much sense, really.

Dear Jeffrey
Thanks for the free book! I think what you're doing is great. I also think it will pay off in time. What happens to me, and to others I know, is that I get a chapter or two into a SF book (only SF books and literary fiction for some reason) and realize I have no idea what the book is about, who the characters are or why I should care. This has happened to me so often, I don't buy unknown SF authors anymore. If I can't borrow a book by an author, he or she is off my reading list. I can't afford to spend money on books I don't even understand, much less like. So, I will read your book and if I understand it and like it I promise to buy other books from you. I think this is a great idea for readers and a great chance to expand the reader base for authors. Thanks again. |

In case they want to do it "right", mime type for LRF (and LRX) files is "application/x-sony-bbeb".

Thanks a lot! Grabbed your novel, added it to the reading list
![]() I hope you find a way to offer Sunburn for sale as an Ebook. To check for corrupt word in ebook files you can use the Text Analyzer pluggin for µbook ( www.gowerpoint.com for the reader and http://coderyder.starke-muegge.de/in.../EbooksQuality for the pluggin ). Its compare each word with a dictionary files and give a list and a percentage of unknown word (generally first name but also corrupt or mispelled words). And the giveaway—and Jeffrey Carver himself—have just gotten a glowing write-up on Tor.com.

By the way, Strange Attractors is getting close to being an ebook. The Word file is now in good shape, and I think at this point it's ready for conversion. Do I have the same volunteers? :) |

Sure, I'll be glad to. For my part, you might want to go ahead and run it through whatever script you used to produce the raw PML markup on the first one, then email it to me and I'll work from there.

Will do. Probably be a day or so. I'm taking a little time off from this project.

Is it just me or is MR morphing into something much more than a collection of friendly people that enjoy reading?
