Original reasons were curiosity and lower prices of ebooks.

What I like:
It's not a pbook, more convienent
I never used to use my public library, now I do

What I don't like:
ebooks are now more expensive than pbooks

This is absolutely contrary to my experience. I buy most of my books from Amazon UK, and typically an eBook will cost somewhere between half and two thirds the price of the equivalent paperback.

It may certainly be true that if you buy new releases, an eBook will cost more than a heavily-discounted hardback.

Even buying primarily new releases, I rarely run into an ebook that costs more than its physical counterpart (from the same vendor).

Try cozy mystery new releases at Amazon.com and we talk.

No thanks; but point taken.

Perhaps I should have specified that I rarely run into a new release ebook from a major imprint that was more expensive than its physical counterpart. I'm sure the specialty market is different (but then it always has been).

That's not value judgement, just an observation. Eclectic tastes are often pricier than mainstream ones--digital or physical.

I'm talking about Penguin releases, not a minor imprint The same usually happens with romance or urban fantasy, at the Big Five. So not a very small market I think almost all the new releases in MM at Penguin have the, same price pattern.

And this is contrary to my current experience. I'm guessing we are interested in different books.

Possibly. As an example, my most recent purchase was "August Heat" by Andrea Camilleri, a book in the "Inspector Montelbano" series. The Kindle ebook was £4.29, the paperback is £7.99. Ie the ebook is 54% of the price of the paperback. This is typical for the books that I buy.

I'm certainly not saying that all ebook are cheaper than their paper equivalents. I am, however, disagreeing with the blanket assertion that "ebooks are now more expensive than pbooks". Some may be, but it's clearly untrue to claim it as a universal truth.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying Penguin (and other big five publishers) puts a higher price on their new release Cozy, Romance, or UF ebooks compared to their other new release ebooks? Or that they sell their new-release physical books for less than their other new-release physical books?

I'm used to a $12-$16 price on Big5 new release ebooks, and $18-$22 on their new release hardbacks (for the same title). I guess I'm asking if they're inflating the ebook price of new cozy, romance, or uf ebooks; or if they're pricing their new release cozy, romance, or uf pbooks cheaper?

Books e and p both come in various prices just like everything else.
I personally usually wait till the book is $1.99 or less.
But then I have a TBR 20 years long.

It would, I think, be more useful to discover the truth of the matter!

Sorry for no explaining myself. I think the difference is the format. I'm talking about new releases which go directly to mass market. In this case, the ebooks is 7.99$ (or 6.99$ in some cases) and, usually, the paper book goes around 6$ (or even less).
