We really need a forum tool that will send an alert when a thread with a rather boring topic gets derailed into something totally fascinating.

The Kuykendahl guy the road was named after was probably Dutch I guess. One of our Dutch members may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "uy" is pronounced something like "oi" in Dutch, which is certainly closer to "ir" than to "ai".

Not really. Neeps is used in some parts, but it isn't widely used except in combination with haggis (as in the traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties), turnip is the commonly used term in Scotland.
Its a bit confusing as although technically swede and turnip are two different variations, at least where I'm from we don't use the term swede at all, they are all just turnips, the smaller white ones are early turnips, the bigger yellow ones are just turnips. I'd say its probably only in the past ten years that in supermarkets in Scotland we've started to see them labelled as swedes, previously it was just turnip. Not quite as bad as making up a completely ridiculous name like rutabaga. ![]() Last edited by soulfuldog; 02-08-2016 at 11:37 AM. |

Not quite, it seemingly depends where you are from. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnip_(terminology)
Its all incredibly confusing, we only ever eat the bigger yellow one anyway, and its a turnip (despite often being labelled a swede in the supermarket). As if its not confusing enough that we all pronounce stuff differently, we've got to have different names in some cases too despite speaking the same language... |

How do Swedes feel about their name being used for a vegetable?

As I say, "swede" is actually a short form of "swedish turnip", although nobody ever uses the full name. The American word "rutabaga", I'm interested to discover, is also a Swedish word, so that's seemingly where it originated from in both our countries.

I just thought of another odd one.
This one is from Australia. Shrimp or prawns on the barbie. Why are they putting crustaceans on a doll? Yes I know a barbie is actually a barbecue pit in Australia. In America, Barbie is a doll. |
