The Kuykendahl guy the road was named after was probably Dutch I guess. One of our Dutch members may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "uy" is pronounced something like "oi" in Dutch, which is certainly closer to "ir" than to "ai".

Err... According to that link Lewis was only used on the song Hello Dolly, every other time Louie was used (including by his wife). I'm kinda sticking with Louie on this one

Errm.

Quote:
Judging from home recorded tapes now in our Museum Collections, Louis pronounced his own name as “Lewis.” On his 1964 record “Hello, Dolly,” he sings, “This is Lewis, Dolly” but in 1933 he made a record called “Laughin’ Louie.” Many broadcast announcers, fans, and acquaintances called him “Louie” and in a videotaped interview from 1983 Lucille Armstrong calls her late husband “Louie” as well. Musicians and close friends usually called him “Pops.”
I was talking about the man himself, not wives, broadcast announcers, fans and acquaintances. So he used "Lewis" at home and on one recording, "Louie" on one recording, period. But you can stick with what you like. I grew up with "Louie Armstrong" and kinda like it better myself.

Not really. Neeps is used in some parts, but it isn't widely used except in combination with haggis (as in the traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties), turnip is the commonly used term in Scotland.

Its a bit confusing as although technically swede and turnip are two different variations, at least where I'm from we don't use the term swede at all, they are all just turnips, the smaller white ones are early turnips, the bigger yellow ones are just turnips. I'd say its probably only in the past ten years that in supermarkets in Scotland we've started to see them labelled as swedes, previously it was just turnip.

Not quite as bad as making up a completely ridiculous name like rutabaga.

"Swede" is of course short for "Swedish turnip", which is another name for the white turnip.

Not quite, it seemingly depends where you are from. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnip_(terminology)

Its all incredibly confusing, we only ever eat the bigger yellow one anyway, and its a turnip (despite often being labelled a swede in the supermarket). As if its not confusing enough that we all pronounce stuff differently, we've got to have different names in some cases too despite speaking the same language...

Sorry, now I'm confusing myself. What I meant to say is that the swede is the yellow turnip and the turnip is the white turnip. However, in Scotland, the names are reversed, and the yellow one is called a turnip (or was traditionally, at least).

As I say, "swede" is actually a short form of "swedish turnip", although nobody ever uses the full name. The American word "rutabaga", I'm interested to discover, is also a Swedish word, so that's seemingly where it originated from in both our countries.

I just thought of another odd one.
This one is from Australia.
Shrimp or prawns on the barbie.
Why are they putting crustaceans on a doll?

Yes I know a barbie is actually a barbecue pit in Australia.
In America, Barbie is a doll.

That's personal. What one does in the privacy of their bedroom is no one else's business.

Amazing, isn't it?

But shhhhh.

Let's not attract the attention of the mods, they might tell us we're off-topic and to return to the thread's original topic.
