I just charge 4, 5 hours several times.

I work with electronics, One the first things I do, disconnect and reconnected flat cable.

Just tested with two cards, original 4gb, and other with 16gb (until I was able to increase the size of the data partition after recording the image as I saw some tutorials)

Many thanks for the help, my friend. I'm still trying to figure out solutions to this case. I do not know if other people have had the same symptoms (white screen with no activity, and red led fixed when on).

Thanks, Hugs,

1) Did you try disconnecting the battery.
2) Waiting for some time,
3) reconnecting the battery and booting with power supply connected?

Reasons for those actions:
1 & 2) Device is not switching off properly
3) Battery is defect.

Hi, I'm again in need for an image. This time the Glo HD. The screen stays in Sleeping, sometimes I can make the red light go on. And Win10 tells me it is an SE Blank MEGREZ.

So I'm hoping this will help.

TIA.

Wdeb
EDIT: So I reconnected the Glo instead of the HD. Yes, it did restart and this time I used the update and install via kobosetup with the kobodesktop. IT WORKS!!!!! I love my kobo....but the HD is much prettier.
When I plugged the SD from the HD in the computer, I can read the section with the books etc. So I do have a partition KOBOeReader and two unreadable setions. Do you think it really is just the SD-image?

Sorry, I can't tell from either this or your other post what the problem is. A reimage might work, so I have sent an PM with the link. But, you should try a manual factory reset first.

Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

Another one joining the bandwagon; I recently picked up a second-hand Glo HD that wasn't booting, with the intention of swapping the memory card. Unfortunately it turns out that the original card was completely dead (it doesn't register at all in any reader I've tried), which will make setting up the new card tricky; could I bother you for an image to get around that problem?

(On a related note, I understand that a recommended part of the process is injecting the device serial number into the image on the card. Since I don't have the original image as a source, is it stored anywhere else? One of the stickers on the motherboard, perhaps?)

For the serial number, I usually grab if from the "version" file on the device. The only other place I know it is is on the box. I've had a Glo and Touch open a few times, but I don't remember if the serial number was on the board or not.

But, I'm not sure how much it matters. I don't think that most people who restore from the images fix the serial number. Most of the uses of the serial number seem to be OK with the all zeroes version in the image.

Got the image okay, thanks.

The serial number doesn't seem to have been zeroed out, though; I see a 16-character string at 0x200 reading "SN-Nxxxxxxxxxxxx", where the Xs are all digits, but only a couple of them are zero. It probably doesn't matter much, given your post, but would you like me to zero or randomise them so I don't accidentally clone one of your devices?

I knew that one of the images still had a serial number in it, but I could never remember which. Thanks for finding it But, it's not my serial number. The image came from someone else and I didn't check at the time. It would probably be polite to change it, so put in whatever you like.

Will do. Thanks again; hopefully the rest of this reader is fine and the dead SD card is the only problem.

Well, unfortunately that didn't help. Oddly enough, the original card did read in another card reader I had sitting around but hadn't tried before; I still cloned the contents to a new card in case the original was faulty, though. (Also, for what it's worth, the Glo HD does have the serial number printed on the bottom edge - it's just faint enough on mine that it's really, really easy to miss. None of the motherboard markings seem to have any relation to the device serial number.)

Please do let me know if I should kick off to a different thread at this point - I'm getting a bit off the topic of card images - but my current state is:
  • screen does not show any response, no matter what I try. (It's currently on the normal "Powered Off" display with the cover of "Rage of Angels" behind it, as though it had been powered off cleanly.)
  • power light does not come on, no matter what I try.
  • the device does appear to take a charge (at least, it gets pretty warm around the bottom of the motherboard - presumably power circuitry - when left connected to USB power).
  • the internal connectors for the screen don't appear to be loose or damaged at all.
I have neither the energy nor the skill to hook something up to the serial header, but before I give up, I'd like to check a couple of things:
  • if a healthy Glo HD was booted with the SD card removed, should it get to the dancing squares, or would it not show any change on the screen at all?
  • does the power light normally come on when charging, or anything like that? The user manual is unclear whether there's any feedback other than the battery indicator in the top right of the screen.
  • does the power light come on immediately when pressed (ie, before the system boots), or is it only active after boot has started (eg, wouldn't work if there was no SD card present)?
Any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

And to answer:
  • I haven't tried it with my Glo HD, but neither the Touch or Glo would boot without a card.
  • The dancing squares are displayed after the root partition has been accessed. From memory, it is displayed by /etc/init.d/rcS.
  • The power light on the Glo HD only comes on when you turn the device on. It comes on steady for a couple of seconds and then flashes until about the time the dancing squares are displayed.
  • I would expect the power light to come on if the SD card was missing. I think it would stay on steady for a few seconds and then shut off. There has been reports of behaviour like this for people who couldn't get the device going.

Have you tried starting it with the power connected? That's about the only thing I can think of.
