The nice thing about the Voyage is that it does fit so easily into a pocket, and, at least with the Origami cover that I have, the cover really doesn't make the device any larger.

That's what I do to, but that's not the point, it was a 'perfect world' scenario. It's not a big deal to do it that way, but going to Amazon, ordering a book and have it go directly to the device is pretty slick, and if I had a choice between that and Calibre, I'd choose the direct route.

I agree about the portability. I'm keeping the Voyage too, it's significantly smaller and lighter than the H20, it's better for carrying around town. I bought a tight sleeve for it, it's hardly noticeable. If I had to pick one I'd take the H20, the portability isn't a necessity to me, it's a luxury. I read on the H20 the vast majority of the time, but it's nice to be able to throw the Voyage in a pocket if I'm going somewhere. It's doable with the Kobo too, but the Voyage is the better pick if the portability is your primary concern.

I think over time it's going to become more common to find "deals" and bargains on books direct from publishers. So the Amazon ecosystem will likely be more rare rather than less. It's still going to be a big draw for those who aren't very technical, (or don't want to bother) but authors and publishers are likely to continue to limit the middle man!

I think it also depends on where you are based
Here I usually get better deals on Kobo bookstore for English books than on Amazon (Italian ones have usually same price), so even in a "perfect world" scenario, I'd prefer to buy ebooks where I have to pay less for them (and have them go directly to my device, too) :P

Now after joining this group, I'm certain I'm going to break down and buy a Kobo this week (after I figure out how and from where I'll buy my books). The online Kobo store turned me off a little when I looked last week, as the prices seemed noticeably higher than what I'm accustomed to from Amazon.

My absolute favorite place to buy books is iTunes. I generally have a supply of iTunes gift cards purchased during 20-25% off sales, so the discount compared to Amazon really adds up. If I could just figure out an easy way to read those on a Kobo I think I'd give it a try.

If you want the freedom to read your purchased books on any device, I most certainly would advise against purchasing them from iTunes. Amazon or Kobo = yes.

Can you even load a book bought on iTunes on a Kobo?

I don't think so without jumping through too many hoops to strip the DRM. I have a headache after just spending 10 minutes researching it :-(

And to think I was perfectly fine using my very mediocre PW1 three short weeks ago.

Honestly, I think what got me into trouble was handing down my iPad mini retina to my 12-year old so that I could (almost) justify getting a new iPad Air 2. I guess I never realized it, but I did most of my reading on the iPad mini and just used the PW1 outside and for travel. Once I started using the PW1 nightly I started realizing how bad the lighting was.

That led me here – and to the Amazon forums <shudders> – and the rest will be detailed in the papers I'll likely file with the U.S. bankruptcy court...

Oh, so true! I've had gadgetitis since I first got my hands on a pc in the 80s. If I had all the money (with interest) I've pisssed away on gadgets over the years I'd be a bloody millionaire. Ka-ching!

I've yet to find a book cheaper on Kobo than on Amazon, although I did find one the same price today and bought it. I've yet to try Kobo coupons, those would more than make up the difference. The Amazon store is much easier for me to browse though.
