New basic Kindle - Page 9

Well my new basic screen does not at all look like the old k4, or touch, pw etc it has very murky screen. I suppose I should take and share pictures.

Sorry I didn't notice the font sizes were not the same.

There is more light shining on the new basic than there is the old basic, but it still can not match the old basic's screen.

The camera tries to compensate with the flash being off with the exposure. It is easy to make both ereaders look like they have paperwhite screens. Take no photo even this one as evidence one way or the other. You have to see for yourself. All of these photos are effectively lies.

But I'm telling the screen is inferior. Nathan at the-digital-reader noted the same thing.

Sigh. Too bad the Fry's closest to me says not available. I'd have to drive about an hour and 20 minutes each way to the Fry's that does have one. That's not worth the $10 in savings.

I am going to take my K3 buy Best Buy or Staples today to have a look at the PW2. But I'm not sure I want to spend the extra $$$ on the PW2.

A number of early buyers are saying the screen is inferior:

I even compared it to a 2012 Paperwhite and found the screen on the new model coming up short. That shouldn't be possible, but it's true.

There's always been a wide variation in individual eInk screens. Is everybody saying that the screens are inferior, or is it a universally held opinion?

Maybe I have a trained eye but I can tell in this picture to what you are saying. I notice it more in the pics posted from Best Buy the murky background on the new Kindle.

So far it seems everyone who has seen or got one here has giving it a thumbs down compare to the K4B they own.

Yes The K4B was a real gem. I don't think I have heard of one person who said they had contrast issues with it. The text is super dark and gorgeous which we all were surprised after dealing with gray version which had contrast issues.

Thank you for this opinion.

I'll sit on it for a little while and read more reviews. Unfortunately no local store offers the new Basic yet, so I cannot go and look at it myself.

There is only one slight problem with comparing fonts from one device to the next. And that is the assumption that both devices use the same version Helvetica, and if they do that both devices render the same font the same.

For example my Kindle Touch compared to my PW1 - fonts look a bit darker on the PW, but they are also not looking the same. On the PW each font is rendered thicker and it is stretched out a little bit longer horizontally compared the the KT. It is hard to say which one is inherently better than the other - darker looking fonts are not always the best option. The rendering on the KT is closer to how a pbook looks like, while the PW looks more like a some computer screen. If it wasn't for the lacking light and heavier wieght, I'd rather use the KT for how the pages look like.

From just the pictures on Amazon it looks like that the new Kindle Touch uses the same stretched out fonts as in the PW compared to the old Kindle Touch.

This isn't a font issue. The PW has a higher resolution than the KT so that's why it looks like that.
