Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford from Broadway Books is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Add narration for a reduced price of $4.49 after you buy the Kindle book.

Quote:
Book Description

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

Vastly more progressive than his European or Asian counterparts, Genghis Khan abolished torture, granted universal religious freedom, and smashed feudal systems of aristocratic privilege. From the story of his rise through the tribal culture to the explosion of civilization that the Mongol Empire unleashed, this brilliant work of revisionist history is nothing less than the epic story of how the modern world was made.

Product Description

Customer review: "An in-depth, thoroughly researched examination of the Laffite brothers' colorful lives."

At large during the most colorful period in New Orleans' history, from just after the Louisiana Purchase through the War of 1812, privateers Jean and Pierre Laffite made life hell for Spanish merchants on the Gulf. Pirates to the U.S. Navy officers who chased them, heroes to the private citizens who shopped for contraband at their well-publicized auctions, the brothers became important members of a filibustering syndicate that included lawyers, bankers, merchants, and corrupt U.S. officials. But this allegiance didn't stop the Laffites from becoming paid Spanish spies, disappearing into the fog of history after selling out their own associates.

William C. Davis uncovers the truth about two men who made their names synonymous with piracy and intrigue on the Gulf.

Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures by Virginia Morell from Crown/Random House is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a fish? Or a parrot, dolphin, or an elephant? Do they experience thoughts that are similar to ours, or have feelings of grief and love?

These are tough questions, but scientists are answering them. They know that ants teach and rats love to be tickled. They’ve discovered that dogs have thousand-word vocabularies and that birds practice their songs in their sleep. But how do scientists know these things?
Animal Wise takes us on a dazzling odyssey into the inner world of animals and among the pioneering researchers who are leading the way into once-forbidden territory: the animal mind. Morell uses her formidable gifts as a storyteller to transport us to field sites and laboratories around the world, introducing us to animal-cognition scientists and their surprisingly intelligent and sensitive subjects. She explores how this rapidly evolving, controversial field has only recently overturned old notions about why animals behave as they do.

In this surprising and moving book, Morell brings the world of nature brilliantly alive in a nuanced, deeply felt appreciation of the human-animal bond.

White Mischief: The Murder of Lord Erroll by James Fox from Open Road Media is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

The riveting true story of decadence, deception, and murder among British aristocrats in colonial Kenya

In 1941, with London burning in the Blitz, a group of hedonistic English nobles partied shamelessly in Kenya. Far removed from falling bombs, the wealthy elites of “Happy Valley” indulged in morphine, alcohol, and unrestricted sex, often with their friends’ spouses. But the party turned sinister in the early hours of a January morning for Josslyn Hay, Lord Erroll, who had been enjoying the favors of the beautiful young wife of a middle-aged neighbor. Hay was found dead, a bullet in his brain. The murder shocked the close-knit community of wealthy expatriates in Nairobi and shined a harsh light on their louche lifestyle.

Three decades later, author James Fox researched the slaying of Lord Erroll, an unsolved crime still sheathed in a thick cloud of rumor and innuendo. What he discovered was both unsettling and luridly compelling. White Mischief is a spellbinding true-crime classic, a tale of privileged excess and the wages of sin, and an account of one writer’s determined effort to crack a cold and craven killing.

The Hillside Stranglers by Darcy O'Brien from Open Road Media is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Add narration for a reduced price of $3.99 after you buy the Kindle book.

Quote:
Book Description

For weeks that fall, the body count of sexually violated, brutally murdered young women escalated. With increasing alarm, Los Angeles newspapers headlined the deeds of a serial killer they named the Hillside Strangler. The city was held hostage to fear.

But not until January 1979, more than a year later, would the mysterious disappearance of two university students near Seattle lead police to the arrest of a security guard—the handsome, charming, fast-talking Kenny Bianchi—and the discovery that the strangler was not one man but two.

Like Truman Capote in In Cold Blood and Norman Mailer in The Executioner’s Song, Darcy O’Brien weds the narrative skill of an award-winning novelist with the detailed observations of an experienced investigator to unravel, in The Hillside Stranglers, the chilling true-crime story of Bianchi and his animally magnetic cousin Angelo Buono. Compellingly, O’Brien explores the symbiotic relationship between the two men, their lust for women as insatiable as their hate, before examining the crimes they remorselessly perpetrated and the lives of the unsuspecting victims they claimed.

Equally riveting is O’Brien’s account of the trial—one of the longest and most controversial criminal court cases in American history—with the defense team parading, one after another, expert witnesses who had been effectively duped by Bianchi’s impersonation of a man suffering multiple personality disorder. It’s one way a man might contrive to get away with murder.

The Blooding by Joseph Wambaugh from MysteriousPress.com/Open Road Media is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Add narration for a reduced price of $3.99 after you buy the Kindle book.

Quote:
Book Description

This is the suspenseful and powerful true story of the discovery of DNA identification by a university geneticist in the Midlands of England—which changed the world of forensic science and police work forever—and of its very first use in the hunt for a serial killer who terrorized a quiet English village. Playboy said, “this book holds the tension and excitement of an imaginative police novel.” Yet every word of it is true.

Fifteen-year-old Lynda Mann's savagely raped and strangled body is found along a shady footpath near the English village of Narborough. Though a massive 150-man dragnet is launched, the case remains unsolved.

Three years later the killer strikes again, raping and strangling teenager Dawn Ashforth only a stone's throw from where Lynda was so brutally murdered.

But it will take four years, a scientific breakthrough, the largest manhunt in British crime annals, and the blooding of more than 4,000 men before the real killer is found.

I have this in paperback and the film adaptation and I can vouch for both versions as an entertaining look at colonial British East Africa and vintage upper class behaving badly scandals, if one is interested in such.

Also, if anyone's interested in Latin American literature, I noticed that award-winning Mexican-American literary fiction novelist Cecile Pineda (Wikipedia) has several of her novels included in the Amazon The Big Deal Sale upthread in post #111 for less than $2, and I just went and scooped the lot.

(I highly recommend The Love Queen of the Amazon, a very entertaining zany magical realism romp with a firm dose of social satire, which is one of my personal favourites which I still have a hardcover copy of on my bookshelf. )

Product Description

Customer review: "Robertson writes a compelling tale of human drama, intrigue and relationships but wraps it in a slice of Beirut that historians and journalists would be proud of."

Lara McCauley never wanted to go to Beirut. But in 1983, when her husband’s career as a foreign correspondent brings her there in the midst of the civil war, she tries to make the best of it for the sake of her marriage. Unlike the other foreign visitors — most of whom are hard-charging journalists like her husband — Lara can’t seem to find her footing in the chaotic city. Although she’s relatively insulated from risk, she’s as terrified of the frequent eruptions of violence as she is ashamed of her fear. Bored, lonely, and afraid, Lara defies her increasingly bullying husband by befriending a mysterious Polish journalist and beginning to work part-time as a broadcast film editor. But she is an inexperienced player in a dangerous game. As the U.S. 'mission of presence' in Lebanon rapidly morphs into something far more deadly, Lara unwittingly sets in motion a chain of events with devastating consequences.

Drawing on her years of experience as a foreign correspondent, Margaret Lowrie Robertson brings war-torn Beirut to life in this gripping debut.

Product Description

Customer review: "I recommend this book for parents that are looking for subtle, yet effective ways to teach important life lessons."

Age Level: 7 - 11

It is 1943 in Nazi-occupied Denmark. Anett and her parents are hiding a Jewish woman and her son, Carl, in their cellar until a fishing boat can take them across the sound to neutral Sweden. The soldiers patrolling their street are growing suspicious, so Carl and his mama must make their way to the harbor despite a cloudy sky with no moon to guide them. Worried about their safety, Anett devises a clever and unusual plan for their safe passage to the harbor. Based on a true story.

This fixed-layout ebook, which preserves the design and layout of the original print book, features read-along narration.

It's fair to say the life of Dell Parsons was changed drastically, when at fifteen his parents robbed a bank and his sister ran away from home. In this masterwork from award winning author Richard Ford, Dell is left behind to remake himself and whisked away from his home in Montana across the border to Saskatchewan where a family friend with a hidden dark side takes him in.

Sabriel (Abhorsen 1) by Garth Nix from HarperTeen is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .
