I tried quoting Dngrsone in the usual way, but instead of getting his message, I got part of one of Little.Egret's! That's the reason that I'm having to do the quote in an unconventional way. Sorry, Dngrsone. I wish that I knew when a book that I'm thinking about posting is about to go up to the regular price. But, I don't know. I know that it's frustrating to the person wanting the book. And it's also frustrating to the people posting, because they do spend a few minutes and a little bit of effort to make a post, only to have it not last very long. |

To Everyone:
Do the following titles appear in your copy of Little.Egret's message #119? They didn't appear in mine, but they did appear when I tried quoting Dngrsone for my reply to him/her in my previous message! Canute the Great and the Rise of Danish Imperialism during the Viking Age by Laurence Larson The Christian Recovery of Spain by Henry Edward Watts The Age of the Maccabees by Annesley William Streane Leo the Great by Reverend Charles Gore I think that Mobileread has become demon possessed, and I think that I know why: Halloween is just a week away! We should expect more paranormal things like this in Mobileread the closer that Halloween gets. ha Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 10-24-2014 at 06:29 PM. |

I've got good news (no, I didn't change my automobile insurance to GEICO). MobileRead is not haunted after all!!!
Several messages back, I mentioned that when I tried to quote someone in a post, I would get a quote from one of Little.Egret's messages (#99). I felt sure that MobileRead, or at least this thread, must be haunted in some way, especially because of the looming specter of Halloween upon us. Well, I just found out that there is nothing creepy going on; there is not even a software glitch. The reason that for the incorrect quote appearing in my attempts to reply to people was the fact that I inadvertently had clicked on the "Multi-Quote This Message" button of Little.Egret's message #99! Doh! I apologize if I frightened anyone. But, we can all relax now: MobileRead is not haunted! Well, at least, it's not haunted in the way that I thought, it may be haunted in some other way. I'd still be cautious in the next week or so, until Halloween is over. You never know. ![]() |

Free from the small press start-up republisher via KDP Select @ Amazon:
The Classical Greek Reader by Kenneth J. Atchity, an accessible scholarly introduction to the less well-known Ancient Greek texts, originally out from Henry Holt & Company in 1996 and picked up by Oxford University Press in 1998. If you happen to have an interest in reading more like this, I highly recommend classicist Peter V. Jones' (Wikipedia, he's responsible for the Cambridge University Latin Course textbooks and a contributor to the CAU Greek Course as well, among other things) excellent Classics in Translation, which gives a nifty overview of 20 ancient Greek/Roman authors and their backgrounds and style and contributions and works available in translation, with commentaries on the accuracy and utility and aesthetic quality (for the plays and poetry) of such. He's also written some very good introductions to learning the ancient Greek & Latin languages, as well as a series of columns (collected into two books thus far) on the differences and similarities between ancient and modern lifestyles and attitudes and viewpoints, etc. Scholarly commentary on the nuances of Greek writing fills library shelves, even entire libraries. Yet nothing can take the place of the documents themselves. The Classical Greek Reader marks an exciting departure from the traditional anthology approach to Greek literature and thought. By focusing not only on the big names but also on the less-familiar voices--the women, doctors, storytellers, herbalists, and romance writers--we are offered a glimpse of ancient Greece as we have rarely seen it. Kenneth J. Atchity provides the reader with firsthand access to literary, artistic, social, political, religious, scientific, and philosophical texts that shaped Greek thinking. From Homeric epics to the histories of Plutarch, and from the poems of Korinna to the romances of Heliodorus, this invaluable reference provides readers with modern translations of the voices that shaped the classical Greek spirit. Each entry contains an introduction identifying the author and providing information that allows readers to consider these ancient texts in a new light. Here are the wonders of the Greek world presented in a modern, accessible manner, perfect for those looking to refresh their acquaintance with the classics and for those who have yet to explore the exciting intellectual energy of the ancient Greek world. |
