I used a code at Kobo to get the first four books in a collection for less than $3. I'm not sure if I would have continued if they were full price.
I bought that omnibus and there is a 2nd two book bundle (books 5-6) which when I bought my copy was also able to be couponed.

Haven't read the first Magnificent Devices yet, but with the 75% Kobo coupons, I figured it was worth the gamble ($4.50) to get both the Omnibus and the last two.

Good deal! The omnibus contains four fun, interesting stories; I don't think you'll regret buying them. And they're short so no huge time commitment.

I own book 5 but I've put off reading it till the author gets further into the series. They seem made to be devoured one after the other and I have no patience waiting any number of months to get to the next book.

FWIW, I've heard from my blog readers that the books were pretty good. I didn't read any past the first (although if it were sitting there the writing was such that I would read another book). Good point about the coupon. I've been buying most of the 4 and 5 dollar authors at Kobo with coupons lately.

I remember that feeling with the Harry Potter books. I supplemented my supply of stories by reading the fan fictions that were out there. I still read them in fact.

Yeah, I didn't start into the Harry Potter series till they were done. Then I got rabid about them after everybody else was through with it. Tough -- I thought they were cool!
Spoiler:

Thanks everybody for the copious praise about "Lady of Devices". I had trashed it in chapter 2 or so (the dinner party while she was still rich) but I downloaded it again and persevered. I'm not done yet, but I like it a whole lot better further on!

I imagine if you had identified the text as being in the "about this book" info and/or had put it in spoiler tags to start with no one would have batted an eye about it. That said, we all mess up now and then.

Another steampunk series to consider.

Steampunk Chronicle Series by Kady Cross.

I didn't see this series mentioned as yet or I missed it. I've read all but the last book thus far and they've been a fun light read. They're geared for YA. Also, they're discountable at Kobo.

Here is the link to Goodreads with the list of books in the series:

The Strange case of Finley Jane has been offered for free at Amazon in the past. Of course that was back in 2011 according to my records.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Tinsel Tide by Chris Howard (ISFDB), a steampunk fantasy-ish psychically anticipated murder short. Howard has mostly minor illustration credits for small press/magazines, but also one novel which came out from Juno Books, which was a division of Wildside Press before they were acquired by Simon & Schuster's Pocket Books imprint, according to ISFDB.

TINSEL TIDE - A Short Tale of Boston, Officers of the Underground, and Murder

The day doesn't begin well for Brim Archer, who follows the world of mathematics and airships, and lives by himself in a lonely house in the middle of the Nahant tidal plain, northeast of Boston. The day begins with the suspicion of murder. There's no body. Not yet. But the seers from the Underground know where it's going to end up. Right at the edge of the porch of Mr. Archer's house. And they've sent along a few sharp fellows to look into it.

Third Daughter
(The Dharian Affairs, Book One) by Susan Kaye Quinn
Quote:
The Third Daughter of the Queen wants her birthday to arrive so she'll be free to marry for love, but rumors of a new flying weapon may force her to accept a barbarian prince's proposal for a peace-brokering marriage. Desperate to marry the charming courtesan she loves, Aniri agrees to the prince's proposal as a subterfuge in order to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and an arranged marriage to a man she does not love.

Third Daughter is the first book in the The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). This steampunk-goes-to-Bollywood (Bollypunk!) romance takes place in an east-Indian-flavored alternate world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue. And, of course, kissing.

Yes, this one was a bonus book in StoryBundle's Steampunk Bundle.

I actually grabbed it from Netgalley (DRM free) ages ago and the description was quite a bit different.
Haven't read it yet - mostly grabbed it for being a different steampunk setting. (East Indian vs the normal Victorian England or Wild West US)
