if a shank is a knife, then probably the closest would be "chlass" (pronounced shloss*), although there are many words for knife. i'm not really sure though. it may surprise you to learn that i am not exceptionally well-versed in prison slang.

(edit)*heu, not "Schloß" like the german word for castle (i hope i spelled it correctly)... but like "shlahss".

I'm not attempting to answer for the French term --- but there's also the lovely term "shiv". I think that means any hidden (or not?) blade, not just one made from other stuff while in prison.

"Gezellig" in Dutch is also generally considered untranslatable, at least into English.

Do you think a combination of 'perturbation', 'whither', and 'tease' as in to tease hair, fits?

In French, you'd probably use "sociable, familier, intime, plaisant, confortable, douillet, agreable". The expression "Het is hier gezellig" would be translated as "on est bien ici" but I'm not sure it covers the entire meaning.

I've never been able to find a nice, single-word English translation for it.

If "gezellig" means the same as "gesellig" in German: how about "chummy"?

You did, although that's the old spelling (you've heard of the spelling reform from 1998?) – the new spelling is "Schloss".

well, based on the examples he gave and the french translations, it seems to describe a place or an ambiance more than a person, and i think i would use chummy or affable to describe a person, not a place.
