Yes, direct support of DRM-free epub would make it easier to send epubs to a Kindle.

The question is whether it would make it enough easier for enough customers for it to be worth Amazon's while to do so. I would argue that it's not enough of a benefit to be worth it to Amazon, especially since Amazon would gain no benefit from it whatsoever.

It's in Amazon's best interest to do things for people who want to buy from them: that's why they have great customer service, good quality devices, and affordable ebooks. Those things benefit their customers in such a way as to make it easy for the customers to buy from Amazon.

I chose a Kindle because the price was right, and whether Amazon is a monopolist or not, they treat me better as a customer than any other company. I can see the concerns, but as a customer, I'm most interested in the service I receive, and I am served better by Amazon than the competition.

As for Caliber, it may take you 20 minutes to understand it but I think it would be a little more for me and compared to 0 minutes required if the Kindle had DRM Free Epub support. (Also as I mentioned before I am NOT comfortable using Calibre).

Anyways, should there one day be an Epub supporting Kindle, let me know as I might be interested ...

Yes but you know what would be even more simple considering I'm not comfortable with Calibre ?
Epub support on the Kindle ... But we already discussed all this in previous posts.
My point was that the vast majority of people who are unaware of DRM issues and who are not able or 'comfortable' with calibre or other conversion softwares, are not going to be tracking down non DRMed epubs to use on their kindle. ... But others have I am sure pointed this out already at least once or twice.
And you can put non DRMed mobis on a Kobo for instance, but how many would do this. You probably do, but not many others I would guess.

The Kindle is an Amazon store delivery vehicle. They make no money on the hardware and are not interested in selling it to those who want to read epub books on it. So don't hold your breath.

Never owned a Kindle, either, partly for the same reason's as sun surfer, partly because I wanted an SD card and the ability to customise as much as possible, so my first three devices were Pocketbooks, which won me over also for the 2 years warranty, the only manufacturer offering this at the time. I was extremely happy with those devices (in spite of lack of pearl screen), but when my 5" failed I bought the only other one on the market, a Kobo Mini.

Reading pdf (yes, I did it even comfortably on my Pocketbook 360) was a nightmare initially, but with third party apps it works with no problems, so now I am extremely happy with that, and with the abundance of Kobo vouchers and the possibility to take a trip around the world every now and then to find the books I need, I've found myself buying books almost exclusively from their store.

I've had a look at the PW2, but I will most likely get myself an Aura for Christmas, it is simply smaller and more portable than the PW2.

So I have had my first Kindle reader for about a week, a Paper White. So far I am loving it. It is really nice to be able to read in bed instead of for my Sony device needing a good source of light. No problems with using Calibre to convert epub books in my library to mobi format. A few years ago I tried going the opposite direction. There was a ebook that I really wanted that was only available through Amazon. The conversion really screwed up the formatting and even led to some text going missing. That was a royal PITA to fix!

Convert to AZW3 format for the Paperwhite. It will keep most, if not all format used in EPUB books, where MOBI will discard most of it.

The only problem I've found with this conversion is that the Kindle seems to be unable to handle very large dropcaps. If a letter becomes bigger than a certain size, the Kindle reverts it to the same size that is used by the body text.

The first dedicated ereader was the Kobo touch.
A colleague had a Kindle and I had a play with it and compared to a Kobo Touch another colleague had.

I went with the Kobo touch because of the following:

1: I hated the kindle keyboard and preferred the Kobo touch screen.

2: The kobo touch had an SD card slot to sideload, which I really wanted, so there would be no restriction on how much I could store.

3: The Kobo supported epub, so I wouldn't be locked into one format.

I've not bought a Kindle and have stuck with Kobo since then (now have a kobo Glo).
It's not a brand loyalty thing tho, it's just the Kobo ereaders provide what I'm looking for in an ereader.

I read on my ipad. Though I think I might eventually get a kindle, I like having the kindle (and other reading) apps on my ipad, and picking and choosing the stores from which I'd like to buy.

Never owned one.
About 1,5 years ago I bought my first ereader, a Kobo Touch, never regret it.

But to be honest, lately I use Kindle apps for windows and Android because sometimes Amazon has great offers like The complete works of Edgar Allan Poe for only $3,62 and some times even for free : The three Musketeers, Treasure Island and more. With Calibre I convert them to ePub so I can also read them on my Kobo

Another great feature is Send to Kindle, it works much better then Pocket with Kobo.

LinuxArie, there's no need to go to Amazon for those books you've mentioned. They are all for free in our MobileRead Library here.

I've nevered owned e Kindle, either. Started off with Pocketbooks, then when the 5" died moved to Kobo. Initially I hated the change just because it was a change, but now I am very used to it. I am trying to resist the urge to get a lighted reader, but when I do most likely it will be another Kobo, as it is smaller and lighter than devices with the same screen size, and won't require a major conversion of my existing books.

Books are generally cheaper on Amazon than on Kobo, but Kobo has a zillion coupons and is de fact more relaxed about geographic restrictions, so I think I've saved a ton in book purchases already.

Never had and not planning to buy one at the moment.

When I first bought an e-reader only Bookeen sold them in my country and I was wary of the freezing issues others were reporting. I searched around and I managed to get my hand on a sony prs-300 which stayed with me for 4+ years. And after 4+ years with all my library in epub format and all my collections and tags and series neatly organized I needed a very strong incentive to go the Amazon way. I didn't find anything to justify the hassle (quite the contrary, tbh!) so Kobo has been.

I started out with reb100 in 1999 (still have it, but can't use it that much cant find books other than public domain to add to it now); then a sony 600--love it, but have to side load all books, added a kobo wireless in 2010, love the kobo, can download books directly from the site or sideload ebooks purchased elsewhere, got the nook color in 2011, love it, same thing, not locked into bn and can purchase or download ebooks from anywhere,of course calibre came in handy with the sony, nook and kobo. Received nook tablet hd+ and can't say enough positive things about it, very versatile in all that it can do besides being used as an ereader and then 3 weeks ago, on a whim decided to purchase a nextbook android tablet, for the money, it does what its supposed to do, all of these ereader/tablets that i have do not lock me into one place to buy my ebooks.
I never wanted a kindle or kindle fire, I didn't want to be locked into Amazon, although I do make many purchases through my android apps, so probably won't ever own a kindle. You never know, so many changes are being made, I may want to try a kindle, but have learned to prefer something with an android base so I can have apps from kindle, kobo, bn and many others so that I purchase wirelessly from where ever I please.
