I do have books with Nook UK, not that they are actually selling this model yet, because of the FW transfer but the majority of my books are bought from independent publishers and AllRomance, not Amazon, so only having 500mb for side loaded content pretty much rules out this device for me. The SD slot would have solved the problem.
A walled garden is all well and good but I won't actually buy books from Nook if I don't have the device in the first place. You have to make the device attractive, get the readers to buy it, then they will look at your store. |

This device will probably stop existing owners of Nook ereaders looking elsewhere but I can't see it attracting new readers. At least not outside of the US, although I do wonder if B&N really care about any market other than the US.

My first reaction when I saw the new Nook was "UGLY!"
But then that was my first reaction to the Simple touch as well. Guess what? I now LOVE the Simple Touch and ut's form factor! It was also my reaction to the white Nook HD. Guess what? I now love the loook of that device! So it seems my first impressions don't last... I do worry about what the white edge will do to the perception of contrast. A thin dark edge (like the 1st generation had) makes a surprisingly big difference to the perception of contrast. But maybe It's fina anyway. Only way to know is by actually trying it. |

But my main problem with a white bezel like this is practicality. How is it going to look after a few months -- after a vacation at the beach and countless times being tossed into a bag or backpack? Will it stain? Will it be easy to clean? Black hides a multitude of sins. They should have at least given black as an option. --Pat |

Well, that's too bad.
The lack of an SD slot is a complete dealbreaker for me. Page turn buttons are something that I like much better than small touch screens. At this point, both B&N and Amazon are offering basically the same product that doesn't have key features for me, and I'm not interested in either. |

Ummm starting a paragraph with Ummm is kind of rude. Don't do it. What I was saying is I wasn't expecting miracles, but as long as there were any incremental improvements (such as the screen, which did happen) I was all set to happily buy it immediately. However getting rid of the buttons is a huuuuuge step down for me. How much does it cost to keep the buttons? I'd pay $20 more, easily. I paid full price for the Nook Simple Touch when it first came out. I would have no problem paying around $160 for an updated, improved Nook (a lack of buttons and sd card is *not* an improvement no matter how much better the screen gets!). Since I planned on getting an upgrade whenever B&N releases their new reader, I'm considering ordering a reader from Europe that has a top of the line screen, shelves/collections I can organize from calibre and physical page turn buttons, that's how much extra I would be willing to pay. To be clear, I'm not complaining on the sidelines while having no intention of buying the product regardless. I was a pretty loyal fan and customer. Sony T3: 1. They're not even available in the US. 2. I'm not sure if Sony's buttons that are on the bottom of the reader will be comfortable to use. I love Nook's buttons on the sides of the device. I'm ruined for other readers. I'm also wary of getting something that's not easily returnable. I tried out the Aura HD (besides the pinpricks on the screen, I couldn't get used to not having page buttons, would keep going back to the nook) and returning it was a nightmare. |

However, I've been willing to put up with the shelving because once that's done I love reading on my nook touch. I have a lot of books on my nook and I don't care that I may never read them all but I really need them to all be organized in their proper shelves. I wish I could, after downloading a purchased book, be able to select a shelf for it without having to go through my whole library which is what I have to do now. |

I think it looks very good without the light on and is improved from the STR in my opinion. The higher resolution screen is the primary reason I upgraded. Ghosting is less than the STR although I still wish they had a refresh every page option. I don't think the refresh is as good as the PW2 but is still very acceptable to most people. The fonts are smoother which is important to me. However they are thinner, and the STR without Glowlight definitely has a bolder look. The STR with Glowlight has grayer text and so the difference is not as apparent. Kindle and Sony newer and older models have similar comparisons in this regards, and I know some people prefer the older, bolder look. Hope that helps!
