Just got a kindle paperwhite in store at Best Buy

As the PW goes retail the forum about defects on Amazon are on fire. I soon see the ratings drop to three and below.

Then why even discuss it? Nothing will ever meet the bar you just set with this post. When discussing speculation and hypothesis, demanding evidence that would be able to support a theory just shuts conversation down, which I suspect is really what you want.

Here's the thing, it's completely possible to approach speculation and hypothesis rationally, and even discuss how one would go about proving or disproving the idea before solid evidence is presented. Part of getting that evidence is figuring out what to look for via hypothesis. That's part of the scientific process. You can't go from "Huh, that's interesting" to "Proof!" in one or two jumps.

The best we can really do here is ask ourselves which is more reasonable and likely. Occam's and Hanlon's razor are good tools for this to come up with the most reasonable and level-headed hypothesis.

I'm not really sure why you want to call me "Applely" as if it's some kind of stereotype. Am I defending Amazon? Really? After I said I believe they screwed up in not just one way, but two?

I just picked mine up from the store and I am un-boxing it now. I live in the Louisville, KY area (if that matters) and will post how it goes once I get it turned on and test it out.

Edit: Well I loaded it up and so far I am happy with it. The 4 distinct "smudges" are at the bottom of the screen, but they don't bother me so much and I am now under the impression that is 'normal' ?

Otherwise so far so good although I am sorely tempted to pick up a Nook ST Glow now just to compare.

That's a funny comment as I've just been reading a few threads that Kolenka has posted in and was thinking his/her posts appear to be quite reasoned and objective, which isn't very often the case with people and their e-readers!

try it in a darkened room.. like bedroom at nite.. curious..

OK so here we go:
This was taken in my bathroom with the door closed (No windows) and with my cell phone (dslr is dead :X). As you can see the light slightly interfere with the text, but I am not sure if this is considered 'normal' or not. BTW this was set at a lighting setting of 15.

The funny thing is I can't tell if they are really there or not in real life ... lol I look at them and sometimes I see it sometimes I don't.

Is it possible the cell phone caused that to show up in the picture?

Amazon should offer eye exams because I feel like I am second guessing my own eyes now thanks to this

I see pink and green. The intensity varys with lighting. Yours is about what my 2nd replacement looks like much better then the other two but far from what I was expecting.

It's ok. My husband swears he doesn't see it (on my Kindle) either.
