Kobo shows you a changelog ON THE DEVICE after you update. My Kobo Glo updated to 2.1.5 last night, and I was presented with a list of changes: faster page turns (and they are, noticeably so), more responsive marking/highlighting (and it is, although it's still finicky/harder than it should be), improved Wi-Fi performance, better choosing of dictionary. To see the changelog, hit the menu icon, then "Settings," then "Device Information," then the "View" button next to "Release notes:"

Hi Not sure if this is the correct section to ask for help? Have just updated my Touch tot he latest software and now find that when I swipe to page forward, I keep getting the notes section at the bottom come up and no page forward. I then have to cancel it and try again, sometimes half a dozen times to get it to page forward. At first I thought it means I should swipe higher, but intermittently it still bring the section up. It is so frustrating that I am thinking of doing a reset to get rid of the update, because obviously it slows the page turning! Any ideas if I can turn this unwanted section appearing off or how to overcome it? Anyone else had this problem? Would appreciate any comments or help. Thanks

If you mean the first, the only way I can get this to display is by selecting text. This can happen with a swipe, but you need to hold the finger down for a few moments before moving the finger. And when you move the finger, it will select text with an under line. Is this what you see? If so, don't hold your finger still before swiping. If it is the main menu bar, a swipe shouldn't display it. But, tapping in the middle of the screen will. I could see adjusting the page turning regions might help this. To do this, when the menu bar is up, press the spanner and then "Advanced settings". At the top are three layouts for what happens when you tap on the screen. The default divides the screen in third. Using one of the others might be worth trying. If what is happening is different to either of the above, we need a bit more explanation of what is happening. |

Firmware Update causing problems with Page Forward
Thanks for coming back to me. The menu appearing is definitely the selection menu - with the pencil, paper, magnifying glass and F in the box - but no text underlined in the main page. If I tap again with this menu up, then I get the underlined text. I have tried altering the area to page forward which made no difference. I reallly dont think it is my finger holding down too long and what is strange is that I can go along reading a book and it doesnt happen then suddenly it happens once and then continually at each page for about a dozen pages. I have a screen protector on which has been on since new, approx a year ago and wondered whether this would make any difference. It certainly didnt on the old firmware, this only happening on the upgrade. Hope this may explain a bit more clearly

It doesn't look like this question was answered already so I will do it.
My Glo updated to 2.1.5(r43939, 10/12/12). Ironically the welcome message after the update actually congratulates you for upgrading to 2.1.4 so it would appear this is strictly a bugfix of 2.1.4 I am glad to see Kobo busy squishing bugs. Kobo's determination to constantly improve my old wifi long after I bought it and it was no longer the latest and greatest helped me decide to choose a Kobo for my replacement. Hopefully they will maintain this commitment to improvement with the GLO. I have to agree with other commenters here on both sides since there is common sense in each. 1) It is quite simple, standard and expected in the software industry to include a device check routine. It is standard practice to expect that people will do stupid things. The average user will have trouble even telling you whether or not they have a Kobo or Kindle let alone model differences. Software is supposed to be designed to anticipate and negate our natural stupidity. I am sure we have all accidentally clicked on a incorrect download like (Mac instead of PC, etc) at some point. If I download the wrong BIOS for my Motherboard it doesn't install it. Instead it says sorry but you picked the wrong file. If for some reason a user gets ahold of a firmware not designed for their Kobo it shouldn't install. Devices are never strictly limited to designed use. You are going to get little Billy putting the latest firmware on a disc and bringing it over to Grandma's house because she doesn't know how to update and doesn't have the internet. Following best practices for programming will help keep little Billy from accidentally bricking Grandma's Kobo. 2) Let the modder beware. If you choose to step outside of standard channels for firmware distribution don't expect your device manufacturer to fix it for you. What Kobo decides to call internal firmware builds is their business. If you are combing the site and choose to find an experimental build and install it then you are taking your chances. One of these is something Kobo can easily implement for the sake of customer satisfaction. The other is something that most of us power users learn the hard way somewhere along the road. |

One thought, when this happens, what is shown when you press the pencil icon? If no text is selected, it will display a message about how to select text. Otherwise, it has a menu for adding a note or highlight. As it occurs on a page and from then on, it could be the book. What happens if you go back a few pages and then page forward again? Having said that, as it happens after a while of reading, it might be a bug that only happens after a while. If you close the book and open it again, does this keep happening? Or put it to sleep? I normally tap the screen to turn the page, but, I'll try and remember to only swipe when I am reading today and see what happens. |

I bought 2 Glo's Oct 4th at Chapters here in Ottawa, Ont.
One to replace my wife's K-T bought last fall and one to replace my K-T purchased mid July this year. Set up was very easy for both via wifi. Firmware 2.1.4 I was very impressed with the performance increase both in page turns and processing of large number of e-books residing on an SDHC card as compared to our K-T's. Both screens had no flaws in the light distribution skin. I am not bothered by the abnormality (or unevenness) of the light distribution where the LED's are located at the bottom of the screen. Kobo has produced a way of minimizing the effect by allowing the user to turn on a dark bar across the bottom for those that find it distracting. I have had no issues reading Kepub books with or without the light. I cannot say the same for books accessed from the micro SDHC card. I found that the K-Glo would often reboot when coming out "Sleep" to continue reading an e-book that resided on the SDHC card. The e-book page would appear but my next action ( page turn or menu access) would usually cause a re-boot. This was pretty well guaranteed when the light was on. After the reboot I was able to read normally (with or without the light) without any re-boot issues until the next reading session. This was happening with both units, more so if the light was on before putting them to "Sleep". On reading the various comments here in the forums I figured I would give Kobo a chance to resolved these annoying issues. As far as I am concerned Kobo managed to do that with FW 2.1.5. I no longer have reboot issues with or without the light on while reading an e-book stored on my SDHC card and coming out of "Sleep mode". This to me was the biggest bug and only one that I was aware of. The Glo is much more responsive dealing with page turns, library page scrolls as well as up-dating of the library page icons. The creation of "Shelves" as well as the "Library" searches and adding of books to the "Shelves" is much faster than the K-T was. (each processing the same volume of books). So is the typing on the keyboard. The only concern and question I have is "How fragile is the light transmission film?". I did some reading on the technology when it was first announced for the "Barns & Noble Glo" and it sounded like the screen can easily be damaged. If creased (scratched) the light will bleed through the damaged area. So I would recommend being careful when handling any sharp/pointed objects (such as pens) in your hands and reading the K-G at the same time. As for our K-T's both have also been updated to the latest FW and will probably be gifted to family members or kept as back-up units but it would be very hard to go back once you have experienced the Glo. IMO the technology is the same across all the new self contained lighted e-ink devices. PS: I still see chapter numbers as well as page numbers on the bottom of the page for Kepub books and as before just page numbers for non-Kepub books. Hi David, Well I had a good try at all kinds of swipes, taps and opening & closing etc. The problem occurs with various books - and only has since the upgrade - I input via Calibre. Closing down & re-opening doesnt make any difference and I am definitely not swiping and holding down. The reason I started using a swipe was because I found a tap didnt always work whereas a swipe seems to - or should I say seemed to. I am going to save my books and do a factory reset and then upgrade the firmware again to see if this sorts the problem. Hopefully if it is some bug only apparent with my K, then there may be a chance of fixing it. It seems nobody else has this problem? Will let you know if anything changes.

What they need to do on the next upgrade is improve the slider bar for finding a page when in a book, it's useless and about the best you can hope for is within 10 pages most of the time. It needs a scrubbing speed change when you move your finger further from the bar, like on iphones/ipod touches.
Yet to update, I haven't used the wifi on my Glo since I bought it so will update when I get home ![]() |

When using page slider to scan for book page, numbers shown in pop up window is ok for changing book pages. When changing library pages scanning for title or author pop up window above page slider should show what your scanning for which is titles or authors on pages not page numbers.
Books are printed on paper with each page having a page number that never changes because you can not change font size printed in book. E-readers allow you to change font size so page numbers are not hard set to page like a paper book. One page number might cover 5 or more page turns. When I stop reading a book on my Kobo and start reading same book again in that same reader it opens book to same location in book when I stopped reading. This is regardless number of books I have read on that reader or time since I last read that book, it still opens book at correct location. This is fine for my causal reading. This Might not be good enough for a text book or research notes. |

Ironically that black bar bothers me so I keep it off and I have no problems with the slight unevenness there

DAvid, I had to reinstall the new upgrade twice but finally managed to get the Welcome Message after the second attempt and it seems to be behaving much better, very rarely getting the menu at the bottom pop up. Although I used Kobo to upgrade, the final try I used a straight wifi connection which did the trick! The moral seems to be dont use Kobo to upgrade for me. Thanks for your help.
