Agreed. Unfortunately a lot of the people never read the silmarillion after LotR which is helpful if not necessary to judge the depth of the whole. Using only the hobbit as reference stops one from widening and deepening the view of the whole concept.

I was about 12 when I read LotR, I think. That seems the right age, to me.

You can read LOTR as a straightforward adventure story as a 12-year-old, I agree. But there's a heck of a lot in it that you aren't going to understand, or be interested in, at that age.

I've reread some of the stories that I initially read as a child and noticed things that I didn't initially see, but they are children's stories anyway.

Certainly. The Narnia stories are perhaps a good example of that. But LOTR is not a children's book; it's an adult book which can be read by children. That's a very different thing.

I'd say LotR almost marked the point where I started reading adult fiction. There wasn't really any teen-oriented fiction then, that I recall, but quite a lot of adult fantasy/SF was clean and relatively wholesome.

Wasn't sexual though which is why I'd have though Heinlein would have been a better fit. Thinking about it, if I remember right, John Nornam's Gor books were full of the stuff.
