Now that the Kindle Fire is available, I expect those numbers to be reversed.

I meant in the context of a clueless someone 'accidentally' buying the Galaxy Tab thinking it's an iPad. People who don't know any better will just go into the store and ask for an iPad, and will be sold an iPad. They probably don't even know the Galaxy Tab exists.

And I was commenting on the number of people who are clueless.

Nobody doubts that the Chinese were very innovative before the Qing dynasty. You actually forgot newspapers (they had printed newspaper circulation as early as the 8th century), silk, the knights' "chainmail" made out of paper (provided better protection than full European suits of armor almost 1000 years later and weighed only 1/10th of those), and ship building.

However, we were talking about the years after 1949. We are talking about the current situation with the lack of IP protection. The only innovation that comes out now is with the help of huge government grants.

Hand canon, land mine (13th century, time when Europe sucked and we'd probably lose ancient greek's knowledge, if not arabs).

For modern inventions:

Quote:
Anti-ship ballistic missile: The anti-ship ballistic missile is a quasiballistic missile designed to hit a warship at sea. The Chinese military developed the "world’s first anti-ship ballistic missile system", although officials at the United States Navy are uncertain of the weapon's efficacy.[570] According to the U.S. Navy, the ASBM is currently in "initial operational capability" and is approaching deployment.[571]
Arteminisinin, anti-malarial treatment: The antimalarial drug of compound artemisinin found in Artemisia annua, the latter being a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine, was discovered in 1972 by Chinese scientists in the People's Republic led by Tu Youyou (屠呦呦) and has been used to treat multi-drug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum malaria.[572]
Cloning, fish: In 1963, Chinese embryologist Tong Dizhou produced the world's first cloned fish by inserting the DNA from a cell of a male carp into an egg from a female carp. He published the findings in a Chinese science journal.[573] This occurred eleven years after the first alleged cloning of an animal, tadpoles in 1952, and 34 years before the cloning of Dolly the Sheep in 1996.
Electronic cigarette, electronic cigar, electronic pipe: The electronic cigarette, an electrical device that attempts to simulate the act of tobacco smoking, was invented in 2003 by Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist in Beijing. The patent for the invention is owned by Ruyan, a pharmaceutical corporation based in Hong Kong. The electronic cigarette consists of "a small lithium battery that atomizes a liquid solution of nicotine", producing a vapor that is inhaled.[574]
Heterosis in rice, three-line hybrid rice system: A team of agricultural scientists headed by Yuan Longping applied heterosis to rice, developing the three-line hybrid rice system in 1973.[575] The innovation allowed for roughly 12,000 kg (26,450 lbs) of rice to be grown per hectare (10,000 m2). Hybrid rice has proven to be greatly beneficial in areas where there is little arable land, and has been adopted by several Asian and African countries. Yuan won the 2004 Wolf Prize in agriculture for his work.[576]
Maglev wind power generators: In 2006, a new type of wind power generator employing magnetic levitation (maglev) was showcased at the Wind Power Asia Exhibition in Beijing.[577][578] Li Guokun was the chief scientific developer of the new maglev wind power generator, in collaboration with the Guangzhou Energy Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology Company based in Guangzhou.[577][578] Li Guokun states that traditional wind turbines need high wind speeds to start, due to friction caused by their bearings.[577][578] The new frictionless maglev wind generator requires wind speeds of only 1.5 m per second (or 5 km an hour) to start and are expected to cut operational costs for wind farms by half, i.e. overall cost of roughly 0.4 Chinese yuan per kilowatt hour.[577][578]
Synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin: In 1965, Chinese scientists synthesized bovine insulin, with the "same crystalline form and biological activities as natural insulin."[579] The project began in 1958, and is considered one of the "first proteins ever synthesized in vitro."[580]
Tianhe interconnect, supercomputing: According to Ashlee Vance, Chinese researchers have developed an interconnect that "can handle data at about twice the speed of InfiniBand." This interconnect is essential to the Tianhe-IA, which is currently the second fastest supercomputer in the world.[581]
Source.

That not counting crazy stuff like artificial chicken eggs:

Well, my point exactly. All except the 4th were GOVERNMENT FINANCED projects, most of them even during Mao's time. And if any of these was a commercial success, then we haven't heard of them. It appears there are no wind farms based on this mysterious generator. As far as the missile is concerned, do you really think this was a Chinese development, rather than just a knock-off?

The electronic cigarette is again a knock-off of a Phillip Morris product.

Heh. I've been asked if my B&N Nook Color is "an iPad" and I've been asked if my B&N Nook Classic is "a Kindle". To a lot of people, iPad and Kindle are Kleenex.

I absolutely agree that people are more likely to ask the store clerk for "an iPad" even if John has an android tablet.

Funny enough, I took my Sony PRS-950 to a book club the other day and an Amazon customer reached for it saying, "Oh, is that the new Kindle? I LIKE it."

Of what relevance is the fact that these projects were government financed? You made a challenge and were answered decisively. You can't change the goal post after the fact. And, as far as government financing is concerned, many of the best technologies that the west has come up with are the product of government financing in some form, whether it be defense project spin-offs (like the Internet) or research done at public universities. It is absolutely irrelevant to the questions of either creativity or innovation.

The premise was, that people don't spend a lot of time and money on developing new things when there is no patent and copyright protection because it is not worthwhile for them.

Government financing does make it worth for them, obviously. They can research and be creative to their hearts' content with no risk at all. Even if they produce no results. And those were pretty slim results after quite a few days of research from your side, covering 60 years for the most populous nation on earth.

What you really should do is a before and after more stringent copyright and patent protections in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. How far they have come sinde then. Anyway, give China 5 more years and the "Wild West" period will be over.

If you look at Apple's list in the OP, what new things that they developed do they need copyright protection for?

Apple did develop one revolutionary product after all -- the Newton. And they revolutionized marketing, not that you can patent or copyright that.

They do design nice looking products, though. No doubt about that.
