What I can't understand is why everything was fine for the first 1-2 weeks. I mean sleep mode just worked and battery life was fine: I could quickly press the on/off button at night and the next evening I could just press the button and I was back reading at the same page and tghe battery wasn't saying charge me! sleep mode worked and battery life was fine. so what happened in the last week or so?

Smile Applaud for the Vox

My wife bought me a new Vox for Christmas, I followed all instructions including the initial download update and the device works to perfection. I have experienced no problems to date. I loaded all the recommended apps, and several books from Kobo. I spent some time today reading my first book and the experience was first class, excellent screen. I spent time surfing the web and getting some 3rd party apps and all went well. Can my wife pick a great gift? The answer to date is YES SHE CAN.

My Vox worked just fine for me until I installed the first beta. Then the sleep of death issues started and still haven't been fixed.

We need more testimonials like that to balance all the complaints. I'd hazard a guess that if every Vox owner were polled, those having the problems would be a very small percentage. If what we see here were an overall representation of all Vox customers, it would be front page news in all the media, just like the Great Blackberry Blackout was.

I received mine for my birthday about a month ago and no problems. My daughter got one for Christmas and no problems.

Mine has been fine apart from Christmas day, when I got the SOD several times and it was reluctant to connect to the WiFi router. Back to normal the following day.

The good news solwisesteve is that misery loves company and you have lots of it.
Mine was exactly the same as yours until I decided to do an experiment and see how long it could be left in sleep mode.
I had been running for a month with no issues, not a one, then it died in sleep mode. I recharged fully and it had all the woes. I can wake it from sleep mode but it freezes up.
My guess is Android.... or this Android does not take a system snapshot that it saves to the harddrive (since we have an internal sd card.) and then have a process that upon waking invoke system state.... or some such think like a laptop would have.
You will have to turn it off when not using it AND keep an eye on wifi connection when starting up. Sometimes I have to do the wifi connect manually.
They are working on this issue

I also have random starting up from sleep mode as well... maybe this is related to the rubbish battery life in sleep mode. I woke up last night to see a strange light pattern on the wall. When I look over the Vox is part on; I mean the three buttons are lit but black screen. Holding the power button in for 12 seconds or so seemed to switch it off properly. In the morning it was 30% power (it was 90% when I switched off) so maybe it had been on for quite a while before I happened to notice it.

To compound the annoyance. I submitted a ticket to Kobo about these issues and the reply inferred there is nothing wrong and I'm not using the product correctly!! Talk about salt in wounds! A bit miffed about that because there are posts on the forum from kobo people talking over these problems.

So, how can I best do a complete reset/clear to factory defaults including removing all apps? I'll start again from scratch, one app at a time, and see how it goes. Something about Up volume and power button?

Oh and another thing: There are posts from kobo saying you can use any 2Amp charger to charge with, just the unit won't indicate it's being charged. When I ask kobo apparently this is coblers and no other charger must be used full stop: There seems to be differences of opinion about all of these issues depending upon who you talk to at Kobo.

They should really get their tech support organization in sync.

Volume up plus power or to really start from fresh it seems you can hook it up to a PC via USB and reformat it. Unplug, turn back on and setnit up again.

Reformating it won't kill it? I mean what won't end up removing the OS will it? What does +volume and power on actually do?

Reformat won't kill it, will force a clean startup. Removes everything which is a bit heavier than the factory reset vol up plus power which will not remove everything.

Remember there is a difference in what front line support people are given in their scripts / databases, and what people like the developers / product managers etc know and advise.

Well vol+pwr didn't fix it. So next it's format the SD. Out of interest the settings/storage has the option to erase sd - is that the same as a proper format from a pc or is the format from pc the best way?

btw anyone know where you can get spare chargers for the vox (in the uk if possible)? Tried several different 'other' makes and they just don't work :-(
