I went to Target yesterday and had my "1st close encounter" with the new Kindle family.
I do like the Kindle wifi ergonomics. It feels nice on hands and good to have page turn buttons However, background looks more grey than previous Kindles. Now, the lack of 3G is a deal breaker for me. I did not like the Kindle Touch. Is light and the touch feature is also cool, but feels weird on my hands. I found the lack of page turn buttons a huge miss, at least for me. Also, the demo does not have access to settings I think, but did not turn or rotate, so like other have confirmed, does not provide landscape. Sticking to my Kindle 3G keyboard. |

The K4 is a neat little reader if you can stand the screen contrast. If you're reading in bright lighting or outside it may not be much of an issue but if you get one that has a grey background in normal lights it takes some getting use to. It's great for traveling because it's so small. It like a pocket reader with a 6" screen. ![]() |

I've had my KTouch now for a week and it is everything I wanted. A basic reader that is responsive to touch to turn pages, etc. The type is crisp and clear, and the unit is light enough to hold for comfortable reading even with a case on it. The advertising is unobtusive since its on the screensaver and again on the bottom of the content page. Wifi only is perfectly fine too. Very pleased, five stars recommendation from this reader.

Kindle Touch Menu Scrolling
Hey All! I just upgraded from a 1st Generation Kindle to the Kindle Touch. The original was a little clunky and big as a house, but I actually dug the shape and heft of it. Sad to see it go, but nevertheless, it was time to upgrade and I'm very impressed with the touch so far!
However, I'm having a hard time scrolling through menus. By that I mean, if I have 40+ books, which consists of about 6 pages of items, how do I get from page 1 to page 2 and so on? Or if I'm in the kindle store and there are 40 pages of recommendations... how do I get from page 1 to page 2 of the recs? If I try to press the right of the screen, it doesn't advance to the next page, but selects an item rather than advancing to the next page. Never had this problem with that silvery scroll bar. :P Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I think the problem is that there is no way to jump to page 20/40, or 40/40. A 'scrubber' control would be very useful, especially if there were a popup widow that showed where you were in terms of alphabetical sort, etc. Swiping 40 times is no fun and is actually a worse user experience than we had before, where you could at least type in a page number or a letter of the alphabet, and jump there.

What happens if you call up the on-screen keyboard, type in a number, and hit return?
I imagine this would the the KTouch equivalent of typing in a number using the physical keyboard; does it do the same thing? |

KT vs. KK
Since a few folks have asked for a comparison between models, and since I have a KT and an KK sitting here in front of me, I figured I'd oblige.
Weight: The K3/KK is about .5 oz heavier than the Touch. In other words, almost negligible. But I find that the KK has better balance, and is more comfortable to use one-handed as a result. Thickness: The KT is a bit thicker, perhaps about 1.5mm more, than the K3/KK. I actually find it more comfortable. The thinner KK makes my hand cramp during extended reading sessions. But that's just holding it, not using it - see below. Build quality: The Touch seems to use better quality plastics and has a more solid feel to it (but so does the K4). The K3/KK has always felt a bit flimsy to me, although it's take a fair amount of abuse and kept of working. User Experience: This is very subjective, clearly. It could be that I'm just used to the K3/KK - I've had mine for 14 months, and read about 40 books on it. Keeping that in mind, here's my opinion: I hate using the Touch. It seems that doing anything takes a fractional second more than the K3/KK. This includes flipping pages, scrolling, using the menus, you name it. The one handed action is very uncomfortable. I miss the side buttons tremendously. I'm holding it such that I use my thumb to do swiping, and it doesn't feel natural. The "every n" pages refresh is strangely jarring to me. When I first got the K3, I was going to return it because of what I called the "blackflash". But my friend told me that I wouldn't notice it after some time. And he was right. But now I can't stop seeing it because it isn't constant. I find it very jarring. Lastly, I find my own fingers to be a distraction while reading with the Touch. My opinion? Either wait for a color e-Ink Kindle, which is most certainly coming, or score a cheap K3/KK. Cheers, jh -- [Link deleted - MODERATOR] Last edited by Dr. Drib; 11-28-2011 at 06:40 AM. |
