I'm not saying Amazon is shooting themselves in the foot--you've misread me (as Amardoll pointed out--thanks!). I'm talking about people who are promoting their Kindle-only ebooks. THEY are the ones shooting themselves in the foot.

I really don't care what Amazon does. I'll sell there, but I don't shop there.

Take that ePub of your eBook, open it to look at the code and try to change the margins to 0 and embed a specific font and see how it's not as easy as it should be.

Can you post a snippet of what the offending CSS code looks like? I wonder if it makes a difference whether the Word style (for Normal, for example) has the color set to "auto" rather than black. Maybe it's a problem that can be avoided by carefully setting the styles in Word.
The problem is that Word puts in a lot of extra code that's not needed. Like color codes and font codes (for example). These can make a mess. Just look at the code behind any of your SW ePub and you'll see that it's a fair mess.

Sure, it can be fixed, but the time to fix can be a lot and there is no reason for it. All Smashwords has to do is allow the author to upload an already created eBook in the various formats and done. Then you can make sure that what you post is clean code.

Thsi thread is not about ePub that won;t work on a Kindle. It's not about Kindle eBooks that won't work on a Sony Reader. It's about eBooks being sold at Amazon only. These eBooks are then not able to be put on a Sony Reader, nook, Kobo, etc. without having to maybe strip the DRM. In any case, you have to convert. Not everyone does that. Not everyone wants to do that. So why make us do that? You make us do that because you (the author) doesn't care about customers who do not deal with Kindle eBooks.

This is not about geo-restrictions and not being able to get an eBook because of that. This is about authors who should be avoided like the plague because they don't have a clue and/or they don't care.

Really? Then I await your thread criticizing B&N with equal fervor.

I just don't see how it's a big deal, not everything sold at walmart is available at target but people don't seem to upset about it... Personally I would rather not buy any books from penguin publishing, should I cry because the fountainhead is only available as an ebook from penguin ?

ehh...

That doesn't say it's exclusive to B&N. Just that you can only preorder it at B&N. If it's only released at B&N, then come say something about it. That is not a big deal.

This is not the same thing as say a DVD available at Walmart not being available at Target as that DVD will work in my DVD player.

But because we have different formats, it is a big deal. You cannot buy an eBook at Sony to use on a Kindle. Not can you buy an eBook from Amazon to work on a Sony. So yes, it is a big deal.

As for The Fontainhead that's personal choice.

you can't play the latest brittany spears album on your 8 track player either because it's only offered in CD, buy a kindle problem solved or read a different book.

not buying from amazon is a personal choice too.

I don't think that's it at all. It's just wanting people to take into account a wider customer base. That's all.
