Of course not with a German address (I use borderlinx). But they know that I'm not American.

Ok, a question for you.

If you buy a book from B&N, directly, can you read it on a Sony? what part of my statement is not right as per your assessment? Because as far as I know, the DRM implementation B&N uses is not the same for regular DRM/ePubs you buy from other companies like Sony.

No, Sony is not one of the companies that has chosen to support the second Adobe DRM format - Sony chooses not to allow you to read it. Probably because Sony wants to "encourage" you to buy from their store instead. If they could be bothered to update to the current Adobe SDK, it could. That's Sony's decision, just like it is Amazon's decision not to support any type of epub.

You can, however, go ahead and read your ebook on the Pandigital Novel just fine. And as more companies use the current Adobe DRM SDK, more readers will be able to read them. Companies will have to actively go out of their way to not support the format.

Nonsense. Obviously if the Kindle 4 turns out to be all that, then Amazon made a deal with Apple...just like the guy from 'Damn Yankees' did, and Johnny, the fiddler from Georgia....
So in the future, if any one feels Amazon is soulless corporation, they should contact Cupertino and see if the contract has an escape clause to get the soul back.

I call that locked ... again, it's not about the format, is the DRM implementation.

The what? The who?
What a joke.

"As more companies..." You're really using some possible future situation as a benefit?

Oh, then Kindle is totally superior....because when Adobe changes their DRM again...or when Kindle adds ADE support...

Cuz that's all far more likely than the "Pandigital Novel" option actually mattering to anyone.

Locked out of of Sony, locked out of Kindle. If they don't work on the Kobo, too, oh dear those poor poor B&N nook book owners! Locked out of ALL the other major eink devices?! How WILL they ever cope?!?*

*Answer: Just like the Kindle book owners, they'll cope just fine, because this 'lock in' is non-issue that actually effects just about nobody on either side.

It is really silly keep arguing about formats when we all know the issue is not that but the DRM implementation.

For a regular novel or book without images or complex layout, they both (mobi and ePub) serve well as ebook format. Without companies putting restrictions on top of that, people would be able to buy from any company, regardless of the ebook reader they bought or have. But again, it's about business and money and of course, Sony and B&N are not the exception.

Imagine a CD (same one) being sold by Sony, Amazon and B&N, but won't play unless you buy the company's player. It's basically the same. They want you to buy ebooks from their store, to make more money!

This has long since ceased to be even remotely funny. I enjoy (heated) technology debates in thread and forum appropriate locations, but I will approach the mods about possible harassment if you continue to do it any and everywhere I post. Thanks in advance for making the change to keep the peace between us.

You have an ebook, the software to open the ebook and the device to read it on. The ability to open DRM'd files is in the software. Amazon locks the kindle by not having software to open epub. B&N locks the new nook from kindle books by not having the software to open mobi, but keeps it open to other epub vendors, and I think that nook color can (or can be made to) open mobi. Sony locks their readers from all others by having software that only opens their DRM, if I understood correctly what SleepyBob wrote.

Amazon DRM locks the books to kindle software.

so, I assume the best option is to have a multipurpose device where you can simply download or pay for the required software and be done with it? Like my smartphone, where I have ePub readers, a Kindle app, a Nook app etc?

except the fact is there's a huge difference in the two "open" formats. While technically the kindle is open because of mobi, the downside is your choices of books to buy are basically limited to obscure authors or out of copyright public domain, in which any reader can pick up.

with ePub you can go to your favorite mainstream author and other in copyright publishers books.
